Those Tough Greens Will Get No Easier BY STEVE WILLIAMS Expect the greens at Pinehurst No. 2 to get even tougher today.
The players do.
"Look for the one on 16 tomorrow," Jim Furyk said after closing with a 73 Friday after an opening 69. "It’s a doozie."
Furyk was one of many who took notice of where the U.S. Golf Association will put the cups the next day by looking at the marked spots on the greens.
"Looking at where the pin is on 16 tomorrow, if the greens get hard and fast, the scores are going to be very, very, very high," said Furyk.
"If this course dries out, it’s going to be brutal," said John Daly, who shot 68-77.
"It’s got to be a difficult job for the USGA to find four spots where they don’t get carried away.
"I saw where they dotted a few of them for tomorrow and it’s pretty funny. It looks like if you do miss it on the back side of the hole, you’re not going to get up and down."
"Realistically, it wasn’t a day to attack," said Furyk, using the brutal word to describe the pin placements.
"The ones that stand out are No. 1, kind of on the side of a hill. Go look at No. 14, too. That’s a fun one."
"There were a lot of pins that were very difficult," said Jeff Maggert, whose 69 Friday got him back even over-all. "I don’t know if even-par will win the tournament, but I would take two more rounds of one-under like I played today."
Tiger Woods, who reached the halfway point at 68-71, called a few of the Friday pin placements questionable.
"Go out there and look at five," he said. "You’re going to see something that’s kind of borderline. Seven is pretty severe as well. They’re right on a knob.
"It’s just one of those things where you have to understand that you’ve got to put the ball in the center of the greens and walk away with par."
Payne Stewart, who managed 69 Thursday after a 68 Friday, refused to question the pin positions.
"They’re tough," he said. "The way that the USGA, from what I understand, sets the pin placements, they have six that they consider easy pins, six medium pins and six difficult pins. Now if you pick a difficult pin and put it on a hole such as the eighth or the fifth, yeah, then it makes it very hard." | |
