Olazabal’s Bad Break Teaches Daly Patience

BY STEVE WILLIAMS

John Daly had just played the final five holes of the U.S. Open in five over-par Friday, but he wasn’t punching anything.

He was just hoping to be around Saturday for the third round. Masters champ Jose Maria Olazabal won’t be, after breaking a bone in his hand by hitting a wall Thursday.

"I’ve done a lot of crazy things with my fists," Daly said after being told of Olazabal’s incident. "I’ve torn up a few houses and a few cars. It’s not the total glamorous life that everybody thinks. We put a lot of time, effort and energy into this game. And when it doesn’t go good … but hell, if I’d won the Masters I don’t think I’d be punching the walls too much if I played bad.

"I’m the only one right now that has a reason to punch something," he continued in comedy mode. "I haven’t done crap all year and at least he’s got the green jacket again. But it happens, I’ve done it. A lot of guys have probably done it."

Daly, in fact, hasn’t hit on much this year. In 16 tournaments, he’s made just eight cuts with a tie for 14th his best showing. In his last three events, he’s missed two cuts and withdrawn.

He’s actually surprised to have shot 68-77 in the first two rounds, five over par at Pinehurst No. 2.

"Today it was just missing all the six-footers," he said. "I didn’t make any par putts today. But I feel like I’m swinging good and hopefully I’ll be around for the weekend."

Daly was tied for fourth after Thursday and got off to a good start Friday, parring the first five holes. After taking bogeys at six, seven and nine he got back to even for the tournament with a birdie at 13.

But a double bogey at 14 followed by bogeys at 15, 16 and 17 sent him spiraling down the leaderboard.

"I can’t say I hit the ball bad out there today," he said. "You’ve got to have a little luck. It’s a game of misses, especially in the U.S. Open. If it starts going just a little bad, it just seems to keep going bad."

He’s not counting himself out yet, however. "This game’s so crazy. With my ability and talent, if I could just get off to a decent start and hopefully find some confidence there’s no telling what could happen."
