Conditions of Play: USGA Sets Forth the Rules

Open to any professional, and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4. Entries close April 28.

Schedule Of Play

  • Thursday, June 17 — First round (18 holes)
  • Friday, June 18 — Second round (18 holes)
  • After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 scorers and any ties, and any player within 10 strokes of the leader

  • Saturday, June 19 — Third round (18 holes)
  • Sunday, June 20 — Fourth round (18 holes)
  • Playoff

    In case of a tie after 72 holes, an 18-hole playoff will be held on Monday, June 21. If this playoff results in a tie, the tied players will immediately continue to play off hole by hole until the winner is determined.

    Local Qualifying

    Eighteen holes stroke play, scheduled at approximately 90 sites on or near May 24.

    Exemptions from Local Qualifying

  • Former U.S. Open champions

  • Former U.S. Amateur champions

  • Former winners of The Masters Tournament, British Open, and PGA of America Championship

  • 1999 British Amateur Champion

  • Winners of the last five U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Amateur Public Links, and U.S. Mid-Amateur Champ-ionships (1994-1998)

  • Playing members of the U.S. Walker Cup and U.S. World Amateur Teams for the last 10 years (1989 Walker Cup through 1998 World Amateur Team)

  • Playing members of U.S. and European Ryder Cup teams for the last 10 years (1989-97)

  • Winners of PGA Tour co-sponsored events, whose victories are considered official, in the last two calendar years (1997-1998) and during the current year through April 28.

  • Winners of Nike, African, Asian, Japan and Australasian Tour events, whose victories are considered official, in the last calendar year and during the current year (1998 and 1999), through April 28.

  • Players returning 72-hole scores in the 1998 U.S. Open

  • Thirty lowest scores and ties in the 1998 PGA of America Championship

  • From the 1998 final official PGA Tour money list, the top 125 money leaders, and from the final official PGA Tour money list, the leader from the last five calendar years.

  • The top five money leaders from the 1998 final official Nike Tour money list.

  • The top 50 money leaders as of the end of 1998, from the official PGA Tour career money list.

  • From the 1999 PGA European Tour exemption categories, those players listed in categories, No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 7 and No. 8.

  • The top 50 point leaders from the final 1998 world ranking.

  • The top 100 point leaders from the 1999 world ranking, through April 28

  • Top 100 money leaders on the 1999 PGA Tour official money list through April 28.

  • Quarterfinalists from the 1998 U.S. Amateur Championship, if still an amateur

  • 1998 USGA Senior Amateur Champion

  • Head professional at host club

  • 1998 PGA of America Club Professional Champ-ionship winner

  • Any player whom the USGA Executive Committee believes deserves an exemption on the basis of his playing record.

  • Winner of the 1999 Players Championship
  • 1998 U.S. Senior Open Champion
  • In the 1998 U.S. Open, the 15 lowest scorers and ties
  • Thirty leaders on 1998 PGA Tour official moneywinners list
  • Top 15 money-winners from the 1998 PGA European Tour Order of Merit list
  • Ten leaders on the 1999 PGA Tour official money-winners list through May 23
  • Any multiple winner of PGA Tour co-sponsored events whose victories are considered official from April 22, 1998, through the close of entries on April 28, 1999
  • The top 20 point leaders in the year-end (1998) world ranking.
  • From the 1999 PGA European Tour Order of Merit, the top two money leaders through May 31
  • Exemptions to international players as awarded by the USGA Executive Committee
  • Special exemptions as awarded by the USGA Executive Committee.
  • Prize Money

  • An exemption from local and sectional qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Open Championships

  • An exemption from local qualifying for future U.S. Open Championships

  • Amateurs Completing 72 Holes Receive...

  • A gold medal to the lowest scorer, and a silver medal to the second lowest scorer. All others receive bronze medals.
