POLICE BRIEFS: Chase Leads to Arrests in Series of Break-Ins

A high-speed chase led to the arrest of two suspects involved in a multi-county crime spree, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.

On May 2, a chase began in Star that eventually led to the arrests of John Matthew Ray, 22, and Dewey Lamont Martin, 29, both of Carthage, who were wanted for a string of break-ins in five counties.

At about 1 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a possible breaking and entering in progress at a Seagrove residence.

A deputy responded to the scene and saw a red Jeep Cherokee that matched a description they were given. The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver would not pull over.

The deputy chased the vehicle into the Spies and Eagle Springs areas of Moore County. The suspects drove into a wooded area off McDuffie Road where they abandoned the Jeep in a swamp and fled into the woods on foot.
