John Capasso, St. Joseph President and CEO, had many words of admiration for Haley, who served as president for two years and vice president for three years prior to that. She assured all in attendance in the Henley Dining Room she would continue to have a strong presence with the Guild.
“Joan has done a tremendous job in her role as the Guild president over the past two years,” said Capasso. “She has tirelessly directed the Guild’s efforts in continuing to serve the need of our residents.”
St. Joseph’s Guild is a service organization that is active in fundraising for the benefit of St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center, the long-term skilled nursing care facility that serves people of all faiths and backgrounds.
St. Joseph of the Pines volunteers, including board of trustee members and those who volunteer with St. Joseph Guild, were treated to several hours of fine entertainment, delicious cuisine, and pleasant company for the April 27 occasion.
Professional performers David McCallum, with his wife, Michelle, and company, entertained the volunteers with a musical repertoire that included Broadway hits, gospel tunes, Sinatra crooning and Elvis antics. It was an enjoyable time for the more than 110 guests in attendance.
Sister Mary Zeno was recognized for her many contributions to St. Joseph of the Pines at the event and to her surprise was named St. Joseph of the Pines 2006 Volunteer of the Year.
Sister Zeno, with 65 years of religious service to her credit, continues to brighten the lives of Health Center and Reabilitation Center residents through her coffee hour activity. She logs an average of 300 hours a year as a volunteer. Every Sunday she sets up for mass in the Health Center Chapel and assists residents to get to the service. Health Center and Rehab Center residents and patients look forward to her visits, quiet manner and quick-wittedness.
Sister Zeno will be nominated for the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Capasso held her in the highest regard as he showered her with praise and noted that Sister Mary Zeno continued to keep him on the right track as he leads the organization into the future.
“Sister Zeno embodies the mission and spirit of St. Joseph of the Pines,” he said. “She has devoted her life to serving the needs of others and has set an example of servant leadership for everyone in the organization to emulate.”
