Hoggard Stuns Patriot Girls

The Pinecrest girls' soccer team found itself behind 2-0 after the first four minutes of play at Hoggard in Wilmington Friday night.

The early deficit turned out to be too much to overcome as the Patriots fell 4-1 in the fourth-round state 4-A playoff match.

Ann Haywood scored in the first minute, and Jenna Evans found the net three minutes later to get Hoggard off to the flying start.

Trailing by the 2-0 margin at halftime, the Patriots had chances to close the gap. But needing to take some chances, they were burned two more times by the home team during a two-minute span about midway through the second half.

The goals by Emily Conser and Evans made it 4-0.

The Patriots got on the board with a goal by Morgan Maples from about 25 yards out a short time later.

Hoggard (18-4-3) meets Broughton (24-0-1) in one of Wednesday's semifinal matches. The Caps defeated Apex 3-2 Friday night.

Pinecrest (20-5-1) ends a season that included its ninth consecutive conference title and its first-ever appearance in the quarterfinal level of the state playoffs.
