 Birdies, No Bogeys
Birdie: By Pom McCabe, the eighth-grade math whiz from Southern Middle School, for placing 22nd in the National Math Counts competition last week. Thanks, Pom, for showing the community there’s so much more to our next generation than just video games and skateboarding.
Birdie: By Dr. Susan Purser, the superintendent of the Moore County Schools, for politely but powerfully standing up for the successful International Baccalaureate program last week. During a School Board work session regarding some concerns with Southern Middle School’s version of the IB Program, Purser reminded the assembled that “we worry so much about what we are doing to bring up the bottom that sometimes we’re not doing as much for our most capable.” Amen. Public education isn’t about teaching to the lowest common denominator. It should be rigorous and relevant. The IB Program, which is open to any student willing to do the work, does just that. Thanks, Susan, for sticking to your guns on this important issue. |
