Fairway Notebook:Three Get Hole-in-One

Holes-in-one: Ellen Sherman, a member of Pinewild, had a hole-in-one on May 14 while playing the 89-yard, third hole of the Holly Course. She used her 9-iron, and her playing partners were her husband, Bill, and Gary and Joan Blair.

Dwight Pike, a member of Pinewild, scored a hole-in-one on May 8. He used his 5-iron, on the 148-yard, 15th hole of the Magnolia Course. He was playing with Norm Elliot, Bob Watt and Rick Greishaber.

James Demyan, a member of Bluff Golf Links, hit a hole-in-one on May 11. He used an 8-iron to ace the 130-yard third hole. It was a clean shot right into the hole. His witnesses were John Demyan, Greg Jackson and George Zwiebel.

Pinewild: The Pinewild Men’s Association played a team and individual match on the Magnolia Course using one best ball on holes 10 to 15, two best balls on holes 16 to 3, and three best balls on holes 4 to 9. Gross and net scores are as follows:

Team — Doug Harper, Tom Patochek, Gil Gilbertson, Tom O’Day, 27-under; Jim McMahon, Greg Thompson, Dick Weinberg, and a blind draw, 26-under; Mike Wirt, Bill Kennedy, Ralph Ellis and Bruce Townsend, 24-under; Ted Davison, Don Hamilton, Don Jurenko and Bud Kanaley, 23-under. Bill Caso, Walt Danker, David Lynn and Gary Blair, 22-under; and Cliff Hickey, Thom Galusky, and two blind draws, 21-under.

Individual — Flight I: Gross — Bernie Schultz, 76; Ted Davison, 79. Net — Doug Harper, 69; Jim McMahon, 71. Flight II: Gross — Bill Caso, 79; Jim Pryor, 79. Net — J. C. Norman, 67; Tom Patochek, 67. Flight III: Gross — Tony Munday, 82; Ralph Ellis, 85. Net — Miles Baldwin, 68; Karl Ecker, 70. Flight IV: Gross — Greg Thompson, 82; Don Culbertson, 86. Net — David Lynn, 62; Thom Galusky, 64. Flight V: Gross — John Campbell, 91; Gil Underwood, 91. Net — Bud Kenaley, 67; Bruce Townsend, 67.

Closest to the pin winners were Howard Schubert on No. 3; Frank Grimone on No. 12; Bob Mason on No. 7; Dick Weinberg on No. 15.

The Women’s Association competed in the Magnolia Challenge, a match play tournament consisting of eight flights. It was played over three days, and the winners are as follows:

Flight I: 1st — Jean Greishaber; 2nd — Ginger Lash; 3rd — Janell Meyers; 4th — Sandy Gruin.

Flight II: 1st — Peggy Clark; 2nd — Judith Kelley, 3rd — Marie Gilbertson, 4th — Linda Bell.

Flight III: 1st — Carole Roth; 2nd — Judy Connelly; 3rd — Nancy Keel; 4th — Gay Strojny.

Flight IV: 1st — Alyce Keitzman; 2nd — Lydia Healy; 3rd — Sue Zande; 4th — Dee McMahon.

Flight V: 1st — Carol Smith; 2nd — Connie Desmond; 3rd — Sandy Schnare; 4th — Jody Young.

Flight VII: 1st — Shelley Rhone; 2nd — Nancy Schmidt; 3rd — Nancy Reutter; 4th — Marilyn Mahan.

Flight VIII: 1st — Judy Block, 2nd — Lucille Casey, 3rd — Jean Weiler, 4th — Lynn Moore.

Pinehurst: The Birdies played on Course No. 3 May 16, in an AABB/CCDD Tournament.

The winners were: Class AABB : First — Teen Noggle, Cathy Hamlen, Sue Smith, Maureen Reeves, 90. Second — Beth Bennington, Sara Sutton, Silvia Bisbe, Josie Maniskas, 91 (MOC). Third — Billie Oxreider, Joan Sponik, Ginny Lapins, Souna Ja Neubauer, 91 (MOC). Fourth — Jackie Meyer, Kathy Townsend, Linda Guipe, Olive Muiter, 94. Class CCDD: First — Myrna Spencer, June Eichele, Diane Sanford, Claudie Wells, 91; Second — Pat Wallace, Rita Clayton, Terry Rutowski, Jan Aruscavage; Third — Carol Collins, Helen Brissette, Doris Gwinn, Glenna Pope; Fourth — Kadie Hergenrother, Joan Duggan, Marilyn Gordon, Betty Gregory.

The Silver Foils played a game of three best balls on the first six holes, two on the next six and three on the last six. The winners: First — Mary Ann Mills, Courtney Herndon, Penny Warters, Austine White, 113. Second — Shirley Nardelli, Norma Cappalletti, Katie Ryan, Kay Monteith, 129; Third — Ann Poyner, Sis Liston, Lynn Heilman, Emma Howerton, 133.

Whispering Woods: The Couples played on May 11, with two best balls needed on par four holes and one best ball on all the rest. Eloise and Jim Willard with Lorraine Stanton and Bill Anderson had 89. Brenda and Bill Kirk with Fanny and Gaylord Maines had 91.

The Men’s Association played on May 10 and 12, in a Member/Member Tournament. Day one was a Stableford competition and on day two it was low net event. The winners: John Roberts and Dick Colegrove, 125; Rich Moran and Bill Kirk, 124; Claude Bandy and Bill Crump, 121; and Carl Williams and Gaylord Maines, 120.

Closest to the pin honors went to Carl Williams on the second hole, John Hamm on the sixth hole, Jim Manninen on the eighth hole and Bill Kirk on the 11th. Joe Matejka won the mystery prize, with the lowest score on the top four handicap holes.

On May 15, in a game of low gross and low net, the top finishers were Roger Nielson, Dick Colegrove and Steve Luckhaus, 228. Tom Rittenhouse, James Dasher and Claude Bandy and Don Stuchell, tied at 229 with Ken Pomeroy, Tom Nagele and Carl Williams.

The Ladies Golf Association played played a low gross/low net event with the following winners: Gross — Marti Libbey, 82; Shirley Brennen, 87; Lorraine Stanton, 90; Mary Ella Miller, 96. Net — Jean Hinkle and Tina Burns tied at 67; Geri Scalia, 69; Patricia Lehman, Fannie Maines and Janet Wood all tied at 71.

National: The Women’s Day results for an individual low net competition are as follows: Phyllis Hudson, 68; Kathy Fiske, 71; Wanda Clevenger, 73; Dot Kennihan, 76.

Foxfire: The Foxy Niners played a low putts game on the East Course on May 16. The winners were: Barbara Arnold, 14; Judy and Sue Bachelder tied at 16.

The Ladies Golf Association played with invited guests on May 17, in a best ball of the pair tournament. Jaunita McCleney and Peggy Cleary were first with 60. Karen Wheeler and Jean Grieshaber tied with Leslie Frusco and Lynn Ardener at 62. Betty Gregory and Joan McCreedy tied with Ginny Siedler and Tricia Knight at 63. Rhea Boelter and Bonnie Quesenberry carded 64.

Bonnie Quesenberry won closest to the pin on hole five. Betty Grissenger won closest to the pin on hole 13 and longest drive on hole 6.

Moore County Interclub Matches: The team matches were played at Southern Pines with the following results: Southern Pines, 39.5 points; Pinewild, 38; CC North Carolina, 36.5; Pinehurst, 35.5; Foxfire, 34; Whispering Pines, 32.5.

Midland: The Ladies Golf Association played a Plate Day event with the following top finishers in the 18-hole division: Flight 1 — Sally Kelly, 67; Shirley Horne, 68. Flight 2 — Sally Stultz, 70; Georgia Snow, 71. In the 9-hole division the top finishyers were: Flight 1 — Ginny Farrell, 32; Bev Braunscheidel, 35. Flight 2 — Linda Parke, 31; Helen Carty and Margene Chapman, tied at 38.

Knollwood: The Rainmakers played a team event on May 15. The top finishers were: Ellie Heron, Linda Piechota, Sharon Stoeber and Ester Sweeting, tied at 50, with Carol Amlot, Penny Higgins, Helen Mannion and Lois Yardis; Gloria Fisher, Elizabeth Garner, Dottie Harper, and Doris Stone, 54; Dot Burtis, Barbara Farr, Barbara MacNamee and Sharon Struck, 55.

Ellie Heron chipped in on hole 5. Dottie Harper had a birdie chip in on hole 9. Barbara MacNamee and Penny Higgins each birdied the first hole.

The Sandblasters played on May 16 in a four man best ball contest, with Jack Henderson, Charles Childers, Rolf Ericson and Carl Arnet carding 22; John Mannion, Frank Tatman, Bill Parke and Chet Reardon, 24 (MOC); Paul Leach, Joe Alden, Len Grasso, and Phil Colwell, 24.

On May 9, The Sandblasters played on Midland in a captain’s choice tournament. The top finishers: Ron Flock, Chuck Crum, James Burrill, Dick Heilman, 32; Jack Henderson, Dick Kelley, Paul Cottam, and Dick Baird, 35 (MOC); Jim Braunscheidel, Walter Schyette, Mac Andrews, Phil Colwell, 35.

Longleaf: The Women’s Golf Association played a choose your own game format on May 11. The Stableford game was won by Christine Carter with 39 points. The Skins game was won by Darlene Luppino with four skins.

Christine Carter chipped in on hole seven and Joan Bell birdied hole 15.

Woodlake: The Ladies Golf Association held its Member-Guest tournament on May 6 on the Palmer Course. The theme was Tee for Two. The winners:

Flight 1: Gross — P. Congelosi and J. Koury, 72. Net — D. Howe and C. Moshler, 59; R. Magee and J. Bessey, 60.

Flight 2: Gross — J. Nestvogel and H. Kearnan, 86. Net — C. Shiels and L. Binghom, 59; P. Bickoff and P. King, 62.

Flight 3: Gross — P. Jones and M. Hall, 95. Net — R. Straka and S. Straka, 63. S. Sterling and M. Robinson, 67.

Whispering Pines: In the inaugural Gender Challenge contest, played on May 12, the Friday Femmes (an every Friday ladies group) were challenged by the Bud Buddies (an every Friday men’s group) with the following results: The Friday Femmes group won 17.5 to 10.5 in a seven-team best ball match play event. The members of the winning Femmes team were: Karen Hobbs, Isabelle Daley, Hope Dugenske, Dot DeMasi, Jane Lankford, Marilyn Merry, Sandy Starr, Marsha Paff, Nancy Donley, Shorty Chase, Sandy Hallet, Marge Tovey, Nancy O’Connell and Kathy Schroedter.

Light refreshments were provided by the men’s team upon completion of the competition.

In Twilight Golf, played on May 12, in a captain’s choice format, the winners were: Bob and Elaine Fetters with Bill and Midge Towne, 19; Chuck and Mary Ann Blake with Jerry and Sandy Gerdes, 24; Joe and Sue Thomas with Don and Betty Winslow, 24.25.

The Men’s Association played a two best ball/man in the box game on May 17. Neil Schubert, Joe Ryan, Tony Grose and Phil Guzzo were first at 119. Paul Molloy, Bob Briskie, Tom Silk and John Gillis carded 121.

The Pinettes played a mixed pars, 9-hole net, tournament and the winners were: Flight 1 — Janet Schultz, 29; Nell Crawford, 30; Karen Hobbs, Marilyn Merry, Jane Lankford, Sandy Starr, all tied at 32. Flight 2 — Sandy Hallet, 29; Anne Gerwig, 30; Anne Jones, 31. Flight 3 — Joan Gillis and Betty Winslow, tied at 30; Betty Lou Kinney, Shirley Sherrill, and Agnes Buckley all tied at 33. Flight 4 — Sis Aleksa, 30; Joyce Rietler, 31; Joan Willison, 32.

Southern Pines: On May 2, the Par Seekers played a Member’s Cup Tournament, net scores only.

Flight 1 — Sharon Hinkle and Louise Pierce tied at 69; Pat Billingham and Jenny Sherrill tied at 71; Cathy Murphy, 74. Flight 2 — Judy Barringer, 69; Carol Millard, 72; Joan McCreedy, 73. Flight 3 — Penny Burke, 70; Jenny Stuber, 71; Milli Johnson, 76. Flight 4 — Pat Hoffman, 70; Mary Margaret McNeill and Muriel Thonet tied at 77; Kay Gebhardt and Joyce Wisler tied at 81.

On May 9, in a low gross/low net tournament the winners were: Flight 1 — Bonnie Quesenberry, 82. Net — Joan McCreedy, 68; Susie Ray, 69. Flight 2 — Elaine Workman, 95. Net — Penny Burke, 69; Judy Barrenger, 73. Flight 3 — Jenny Stuber, 106. Net — Valerie Slade, 71; Jeanice Snyder, Stella Karshner, and Mary Margaret McNeil, all tied at 78.
