Local Thinclads Turn Toward States Today

A number of individual regional champions from Union Pines and Pinecrest will lead their teams in the NCHSAA state track and field championships set for North Carolina A&T today and Saturday.

Pinecrest's 3,200-meter relay team of Andy Wacker, Jordan Rickard, Jed Black and Chase Williams will make the trip to Greensboro with a state record in that event in their sights.

Among those representing the Union Pines boys' and girls' squads in today's 3-A meet are Mideast regional champions Kareem Ross (110-meter hurdles), Derrick Ross (high jump) and Whitney Walden (pole vault). The Cape Fear Valley Conference champion Viking boys' and girls' teams both finished in third place in the regional overall.

Among the Pinecrest girls competing in Saturday's 4-A meet are individual regional winners Katie Fields (800, 1,600) and Bettina Blackston (discus). The Patriot boys got firsts from Williams (1,600) and Tyler Benton (pole vault).

The Patriot girls won the East Regional championship last Saturday, and the Patriot boys shared the regional title with New Bern.
