Story Ballets Highlight Carolina Ballet's Season

Carolina Ballet, the Raleigh-based professional ballet company, has selected three of the great story ballets in its repertory (all choreographed by Artistic Director Robert Weiss) to highlight its ninth season.

These ballets are "Carmen," "Firebird" and "Swan Lake." The company has also added a sixth production to its subscription series and will present "Nutcracker" at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The 2006-2007 season is as follows:

  • "Carmen," Sept. 14-24, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater.

  • "Balanchine and Mozart," Nov. 16-19, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

  • "Monet Impressions," Jan. 11-14, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

  • "Ballet Festival," Feb. 15-25, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater.

  • "Firebird," March 15-18, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

  • "Swan Lake," April 19-22, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

In eight seasons Robert Weiss has made a name for himself with his choreography for story ballets.

Carolina Ballet will present a world premiere, "Monet Impressions," in January to coincide with the North Carolina Museum of Art's widely anticipated Monet exhibit. Principal Guest Choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett will create a ballet to several of Monet's paintings that depict scenes of French life, and Robert Weiss will choreograph a ballet inspired by Monet's "Water Lilies." Broadway costume designer (and North Carolina native), William Ivey Long, has agreed to create the costumes for Lynne Taylor-Corbett's ballet.

The remainder of the 2006-2007 season will include shorter ballets from Carolina Ballet's repertory and several new works. Commemorating the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, Carolina Ballet will present the Raleigh premiere of one of Balanchine's beautiful ballets to Mozart's "Divertimento No.15" along with another Balanchine ballet from the repertory or a new ballet to Mozart music.

The traditional holiday classic, "Nutcracker," will be presented at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium during the Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 24-26, and Dec. 15-23, leading up to Christmas. Season subscribers to Carolina Ballet's performances may purchase tickets to "Nutcracker" before they go on sale to the general public.

Carolina Ballet will continue to tour to Winston-Salem in the fall, presenting "Swan Lake" at the Stevens Center, and to Chapel Hill to perform at Memorial Hall with "Nutcracker" in December and "Firebird" in spring. Prior to those tours, however, the company will embark in September on a two and a half week, eight-city tour to the People's Republic of China where it will present "Swan Lake."
