RSVP Holding Auditions for 'Beauty'

RSVP Community Theatre will hold auditions for its summer production of "Beauty and the Beast" on Saturday, May 20, at 1 p.m., and Monday, May 22, at 7 p.m.

Auditions will be held at the Asheboro High School Perform-ing Arts Center. Performances will be July 28-30 and Aug. 4-6 in the AHS Performing Arts Center. The production will be directed by Phil Homiller.

Auditionees will be asked to perform a prepared song (except for songs from "Beauty and the Beast"), one to two minutes in length; an accompanist will be provided. Tape or CD accompaniment is acceptable -- a tape/CD player will be provided.

"Please be sure tapes are cued to the correct spot," says a spokesman.

The audition will include learning and performing a short dance combination, and candidates may be asked to perform a short reading from the script. Roles are open for high school ages and up. There is one role for a young boy, approximately 8–12 years of age.

"Beauty and the Beast" has been running on Broadway since 1994, with over 4,900 performances to its credit. It was a 1994 Tony Award nominee for Best Musical. Familiar songs include the title song and "Be Our Guest." This Disney classic is based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature (the first "cartoon" to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture), and the stage version includes all of the songs from the film, plus new songs written especially for the Broadway version. Although some may assume that this is solely a children's musical, this production and its timeless story will appeal to all audiences.

This production is made possible, in part, by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council through the Randolph Arts Guild, and from the support of AVS Catering and Banquet Centre and Randolph Bank.
