In the team standings, the Patriots finished sixth in the tournament won by Green Hope.
Barrett shot 74-73 -- 147 to finish in a tie for fifth place, while Fields went 75-73 -- 149 to finish in a tie for seventh.
"Those two players are the heart and soul of this team," said Patriot coach Sandy Sackmann. "They had a lot of pressure on them. They hung in there."
Northwest Guilford's Drew Younts won back-to-back state championships, shooting 73-72 -- 145 on the par-72 course that played at 6,700 yards. Younts won last year when the event was held at Foxfire.
Pinecrest started slowly Monday, with sophomore John Gillespie's 81 and Russell Burke's 82 added to Barrett and Fields' efforts bringing in a 312 total, tied with New Bern for seventh.
But the Patriots bounced back Tuesday to shoot a 306, the day's fourth-best score. Junior Kevin MacDonald recovered from an opening round 83 to post a 77.
The other Pinecrest score Tuesday was senior Tom Lineberger's 83.
"I've got a young team," said Patriot coach Sandy Sackmann. "I started four sophomores, a junior and a senior. We met our goals. We wanted to get to the states, and we did. There are only 12 teams here, and we are the sixth-best in the state. How can I be unhappy with that?
"We just couldn't make a putt, and we will work on that."
Green Hope blistered the field in the opening round, posting a four-man total of 289. They came back the second day and put a 303 on the scoreboard, holding off a hard-charging Broughton squad to win by six strokes, 592 to 598.
Broughton, which has won the state championship six times in the last nine years, started off with a 302, but rebounded with a second-day total of 296.
Green Hope claimed its second championship in the last four years.
Sackmann thinks that Pinecrest is getting closer and closer to breaking into the championship realm that Broughton and Green Hope have owned the last decade.
The Patriots have qualified for the state championship four of the last five years, finishing fifth last year, tied for fifth in 2003 and sixth in 2002.
"I kept 15 players on the team this year," she said. "And they have all worked very hard. I know they are going to work hard heading into next season. We have a solid core returning, and I think that's important."
