Fairway Notebook: 94-Year-Old Scores Ace

By Nancy O’Connell: Fairway Notebook

Hole-in-One: Paul Borel, a member of Longleaf who is 94 years old, scored a hole-in-one May 24 playing the gold tees on the eighth hole, using a 23-degree steel wood. His playing partners were Cy Freeman and Dick Harvey.

Bob Fetters, a member of Whispering Pines, recorded his third ace on May 25, using his pitching wedge to cover the 118 yards to the 14th hole of the West Course. His playing partners were Bill Buckley, Rod Heine, and Dug Dugger.

Pinehurst: The Chippers played its annual Spring Fling Tournament on May 11, using two best balls of the foursome on Course No. 5. Ann Chatterton (captain), Barbara Lee, Mary Lou Norberg and Marjorie Frost were first with a 61.

Sarah Edwards (captain), Cynthia Strickland, Karen Anderson and Lynn Delgarn were second with a 62. Louise Smith (captain), Martha Jack, Janice Huff and Louise Weiss were third with a 63 in a match of cards over Marilyn Fleming (captain), Sylvia Booth, Lynn Reiger and Carol Williams.

Martha Jack chipped in on the fifth hole, Jane Stanton on the sixth and Louise Weiss on the ninth.

On May 18, the Chippers played a game of even holes plus nine on Course No. 3. Joan Frost was first with 19. Pat Pierce was second with a 20 in a match of cards over Ruth Adams. Kelley Kelley was fourth with 21.

The Birdies played a Nassau tournament using one best net and gross ball May 23 on Course No. 1.

AA/BB — Bobbie Smith, Dianne Yelovich, Shirley Potter and Bonnie Hanly were the overall winners with a 128. Marion Mitchell, Tee Noggle, Diana Staley and Sue Smith were second with a 134. Cindy Motter, Jackie Meyer, Sara Sutton and Dorothy Brown won the front nine with a 65. Kathy Townsend, Carolyn Clemons, Beth Bennington and Linda Guipe won the back nine with a 66.

CC/DD — Jo Rolman, Chiquita Hetrick, Mary Lou Sutter and Linda Bond were the overall winners with a 143. Helen Brissette, Marilyn Gordon, Jane Sheridan and Jeanne Casey were second. Audrae Thibodeau, Aurele Timken, Vera Miller and Diane Sanford won the front nine. Addie Johns, Pat Wallace, Nora Sinclair and Terry Rotowski won the back nine with a 74.

Whispering Pines: The Persimmon Open on May 9 was a step back in time for 10 players who decided to play a round with persimmon woods, hickory shafted putters, blade irons and golf balls that were last produced in 1998.

It was the challenge they all expected. The Maxfli HT Urethane 90 just didn’t fly off the club like the balls that abound for length and spin that are on the market today. Longer iron shots were needed to reach the greens, and the putting held true – good putters did just fine.

On the first hole, only two players hit past the 150-yard marker. With their regular clubs, all 10 players would have hit drives that landed well past the 150 marker. All players found it very interesting and all agreed that they really appreciate how modern technology has changed the way the game is played today.

The players enjoyed the event, which used a two-man, best ball format. Three teams tied at 77: Chuck Daley and Dean Donley, Ron Saylor and Bill Wade, and Hal Dugenske and John Hogle. Herb Conway and Paul Sams, and Fred Lloyd and Mark Perreault tied at 78.
