EQUESTRIAN BRIEFS: Polocrosse Team Boasts Top Player

At the Tarheel Classic Polocrosse Tournament held in Hillsborough May 13-14, Chris Younger of Whispering Pines was named best grade A player, and his sister, Sarah, was awarded best grade D player.

Younger and Posh, the American Polocrosse Association 2003 Horse of the Year, led the Carolina Polocrosse Club A team to a second-place finish behind Lone Star of Texas.

The CPC B team was also runner-up to a team from Bucks County, Pa.

The CPC D team emerged victorious in its division.

Benefit Clinic

The Wine and Dine Dressage Clinic with Vicki Kelley is set for Wednesday, June 7, at Wendy Preble’s Inglewood Farm in Vass. The event is a benefit for the Companion Animal Clinic of the Sandhills.

Kelley and her husband, Sean, recently relocated their sales stable, Antares Dressage, to Pinehurst from California. Kelley is a U.S. Dressage Federation learner judge graduate, certified instructor and silver medalist.

A luncheon and wine tasting will be hosted during the clinic, included in the ride price and/or $10 audit donation. Participants may choose a lesson, or fix-a-test format.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Companion Animal Clinic of the Sandhills. CAC has initiated a capital campaign to raise money for a low cost spay/neuter clinic with fixed and mobile units in an attempt to reduce the number of unwanted domestic animals in our area.

Working closely with the N.C. State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the group is dedicated to eliminating euthanasia of abandoned animals through a proactive spay/neuter program, community education, and volunteer involvement. All riding spots are filled, but auditor and luncheon participants welcomed.

For information, call Preble at 245-3056.

Nostalgia Show

The Glengarry Farm Christian Equestrian Program held a nostalgia show on May 6 that was modeled after a 1960 prize list from the Meredith College Town Student Horse Show.

Judges Bridget Ingram, Tommy Beard, and Rachel Kirsling officiated, and trophies were awarded to Sydney Borden, Isaiah Monroe, Rachel Thomas, Salem Pies, Shaquan Monroe, and Morgan Westbrook for their tireless volunteerism. GFCEP Summer Program begins June 11. Call 875-3849 for information.

Eventing News

The Virginia Horse Trials hosted over 600 horses last weekend at a one star long format CCI, a two star CIC, and novice through preliminary horse trials. Moore County fielded top placings in all divisions. Brittany Strange of Carthage and her Luck of the Draw finished sixth of 35 starters in her first CCI one star, adding only 8.4 time faults to her dressage score over the weekend.

At the intermediate level, Gina Kelly and Will Faudree both earned fourth-place finishes with Feral Erol and Don’t Dali, respectively.

Bobby Stevenson had a great weekend, topping two preliminary divisions with Veronese Atkins’ Social Register and his Alcibiades. Double clear show jumping scores were scarce, and Stevenson’s exemplary rounds in the coliseum yielded a personal victory as well.

At the same level, John Williams’ Sweepea Dean earned a comfortable cushion in the rectangle and managed to hold on, barely, to claim his sixth career victory.

Charlie Plumb and Westerly climbed to third place with one knockdown, and Linda Dreher and Remington let her dressage lead slip in show jumping to finish sixth.

At the training level, Lefreda Williams, Will Faudree and Katelyn Foster were all in the ribbons. For complete results: www.vahorsetrials.com

Driving News

Katie Whaley of Southern Pines was a winner at the Windsor, England, Combined Driving Event two weeks ago. Whaley drove a pair of young ponies for her friend Mia Allo of Belgium, and won the dressage by 20 points over the field of six. Whaley flew over to England, and drove the ponies for the first time on Wednesday before the event started on Friday.

“They were lovely ponies,” Whaley said. “But we went flying into the first hazard before I realized they had no ‘whoa.’ We were second in the marathon (phase) and the cones course (final phase) was brutal, we had three knockdowns and time. It was fun, and beautiful weather. I got sunburned!”
