CLUB BRIEFS

Garden Society

The Sandhills Garden Society, formerly the Men’s Garden Club of Southern Pines, celebrated 50 years as a garden club with a special program and reception on Thursday evening , April 13, at the Weymouth Center. Original members Dr. Harold Johnson, Dr. Bruce Warlick, and Bill Shore were honored with special plaques commemorating this event.

Ben Dow, Dr. Fred Garrett and Even Morrell were named as honorary members. Garrett gave a history of the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, and Gordon White gave a history of the club. A champagne and cake reception was enjoyed by all attendees.

President Dr. Pete Hanly, presented nominations for 2006/07 as follows: Larry Cohen, president; Ed Dennison, vice president; John Pfisterer, secretary; Bob Weigel treasurer; Don Bassani and Bob and Andrea Oake, directors. All nominations were seconded and approved.

The next meeting of the club will be Thursday, May 11, at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center on Ashe Street, in Southern Pines.

Weather permitting, trash pick-up on Murray Hill Road will at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, followed by breakfast at the Elks Club.

Professional Women

The Professional Women’s Network and the Moore County Chamber will host the seventh annual Executive Women’s Luncheon featuring keynote speaker, Sarah Parker, North Carolina Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, at noon on Monday, May 15, at the Pinehurst Member’s Club in Pinehurst.

Tickets are $45 for general admission and $35 for Chamber and Professional Women’s Network members. Valet parking will be provided.

MOAA

The Sandhills chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) luncheon will be held on Tuesday, May 16, at the Belle Meade Retirement Resort. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon.

Paula Gallero, manager of Ft. Bragg Fisher House, will provide an overview of the support provided to family members of patients at Womack Army Hospital. JROTC Commanders from local high schools will present their programs, including MOAA scholarship designees.

Col. Don Goulet, USA (Ret) will review retired military personnel affairs issues and problems.

Cost is $15 per person, inclusive. Make checks payable to MOAA and mail reservation requests to MOAA, PO Box 4205, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

Sandhills CWC

Unique Antiques will be the feature for the Sandhills CWC monthly luncheon at noon on Thursday, May 18, at National Golf Club.

Louise Moore from the Rose Cottage Antiques in Southern Pines will display some antiques from her store and share ideas on decorating.

Barbi Smith, a local vocalist, will share her musical talents and entertain us with some of her special songs.

Carol Dobosy of Williamsburg, Va., has her own home business creating custom sewing and window treatments. She will share how to handle “First Impressions and Misinterpretations.”

Sandhills women and their guests are welcome to attend this special luncheon held at the National Golf Club in Pinehurst from noon to 1:30 p.m. Call Joan at 673-5146 or Shirley at 295-1577 to make reservations.

“Be sure to let us know if you will be taking advantage of our free nursery,” said a spokesman.

The cost of the luncheon is $13, all-inclusive. A courtesy call is requested no later than Tuesday, May 16.

Pinehurst Civic Group

The Pinehurst Civic Group will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at the Pinehurst Village Hall. Three speakers will discuss the county water and sewer projects.

The speakers will be David Cotton, interim county manager; Marcus Jones, county engineer and Tony Patnode, a member of the Community Development Committee. They will give a progress report on Phase I and Phase II of this project and talk about the proposed Phase III.

AAUW

The American Association of University Women, Sandhills/ Southern Pines Branch, will hold its spring luncheon on Saturday, May 20, at noon at the Seven Lakes Country Club.

The AAUW International Review group will meet on May 25 at 1 p.m. with Virginia Roth. Trudy Schrader will lead the discussion on energy.

Natural History

The Sandhills Natural History Society meets Tuesday, May 23, at Penick Village North Bldg. auditorium at 7 p.m.
