Red Cross Volunteers Take Spanish Class

Disaster volunteers for the Moore County Chapter of the American Red Cross recently completed a Spanish class specifically designed for communications with Spanish-speaking victims.

Sandhills Community College partnered with the local chapter to develop a course that taught volunteers, who respond to disasters both locally and nationally, basic language to support the disaster interview processes.

Carol and Bob Dillman have volunteered in a number of post-hurricane relief efforts.

They said it became clear to them that basic Spanish skills would be extremely helpful.

“While we were in Miami last year following Hurricane Wilma, Bob and I were somewhat frustrated by not being able to communicate with Spanish-speaking residents,” Carol Dillman said.

Her husband, Bob, added, “Although the American Red Cross does offer translators in some situations, we felt it was important that we have some basic communication skills.”

The class instructor, Luzanda Penton, organized the lessons to reflect the most common questions and responses likely to occur during the interview and shelter experience.

“My goal was to provide the class not only with the pronunciation of phrases, command and questions, but also to help them understand the general characteristics of the Hispanic community,” Penton said. “The class can now identify themselves, obtain basic information and calm and reassure disaster victims.”
