Close to 100 central North Carolina athletes participated in track and field events in preparation for the 2005 North Carolina Summer Games June 3-5 in Raleigh where more than 1,200 athletes from seventy counties will compete in aquatics, athletics, gymnastics, powerlifting, softball and volleyball.
Moore County athletes in Saturday’s event included Robin Zimmerli, Joey Ransdell, Russell Zumwalt, Zayrrick Boyd, Jonathan Sheffield, Andrew Thompson, Wykeya Lockwood, Angel Woodson, Donna Roth, Krystal Covington-Pope and Damian Alston.
Patti Cameron, Special Olympics Moore County coordinator and Michael Wagner, Special Olympics North Carolina Triangle area director, commended the large group of community volunteers on hand who helped make the event a success. Wagner, a graduate of Union Pines High School, was excited about having Moore County host the regional competition and looked forward to returning in the future.
Special Olympics North Carolina is one of the world’s largest Special Olympics programs, providing year-round sports training and competition in 19 different sports to over 37,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
