Letter Carriers’ Donation Drive Benefits Sandhills Food Bank

On May 8, the 12th Annual National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive brought in more than 4,400 pounds of food for the Sandhills Food Bank.

In all, 176,000 pounds of food were raised for the Food Bank of North Carolina, serving 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina. The food raised will help feed children and their families who are at risk of hunger.

In central and eastern North Carolina, schools will be out in just a few months, leaving thousands of students without the free breakfasts and lunches they depend on throughout the school year.

The Food Bank’s partner agencies typically report an increase in the number of children needing food in the summer as parents face the financial challenges of deciding between day care and air conditioning costs and providing enough food for their families.

At this time of year, community food donations to the Food Bank are the weakest and demand is the greatest, so the food raised through the National Letter Carriers’ food drive will give the Food Bank some of the extra food it needs to provide for families and their children.

The Food Bank of North Carolina is a private, nonprofit organization that serves 864 partner agencies throughout central and eastern North Carolina. One of six America’s Second Harvest member food banks in North Carolina, the Food Bank solicits, collects, stores and distributes food to nonprofit agencies assisting people at risk from hunger and has branches in Wilmington, Raleigh, Durham, Greenville and the Sandhills.

The Food Bank distributed more than 24 million pounds of food to those in need in fiscal year 2002-03.
