BARRETT Dan Barrett filed Thursday as a Republican candidate for the gubernatorial nomination.
He is one of seven announced Republican candidates, including George W. Little of Southern Pines.
An attorney and a Davie County commissioner, Barrett grew up in nearby Laurinburg. He and his family now live in Advance.
Im not a career politician, Barrett said in a Thursday news release. Im not beholden to the special interests or the Raleigh insiders. My obligation is to the people of North Carolina.
Barrett says one of his goals, if elected, will be to assure that the state pays attention to the needs of local governments.
But state government is hurting our local communities, he said. This governor has seized hundreds of millions of dollars owed to towns and counties. By doing so, he has raised property and sales taxes across the state and cut essential services.
The winner of the Republican primary election will face Gov. Mike Easley, a Democrat, in the November general election.
