Union Pines Doubles Team Falls in First Round

Hunter McNeill and Devon Graham completed outstanding seasons for the Union Pines boys’ tennis team as quarterfinalists in the 3-A state doubles championship held at Burlington Tennis Center last Friday.

The Viking duo stopped Washington High School’s Bryan Nichols and Graham Toler in a first-round match 6-0, 6-1. Later, they dropped a well-played quarterfinals match to the tournament’s number-two seed. Michael Dooling and Stockton Perry of Kinston edged the McNeill-Graham team in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

McNeill completed a stellar career with a record of 149-33, tying him with Jeremy Sweat for eighth place on the all-time Viking win list. He is a five-time tournament finalist and a two-time champion. He teamed with Evan Ritter to win conference and regional doubles titles in 2001. Graham finished his junior season with a career record of 87-31. The two-time doubles finalist is in 28th place on the Viking career list.
