Carpenter Honored at Retirement
Pender Correctional Institution Sewing Plant of Burgaw held a retirement celebration in the Mad Boar Restaurant in Wallace for Ciscero Carpenter, who worked with N.C. Department of Correction Enterprises for 16½ years and with DOC for a total of 20 years. Carpenter is the son of Mrs. Flossie G. Carpenter of Southern Pines. In retirement, Carpenter himself lives in Southern Pines. “Ciscero Carpenter, Correction Enterprise Manager II, has been a dedicated and respected assistant manager who will be missed, said Mike Martin, Carpenter’s Division director. Nine staff members train and supervise 110 inmates on two shifts at the Pender Sewing Plant, to produce such products as inmate pants, officer pants, jumpsuits and coats. Martin told Carpenter, “Although we had been trained to sew officer pants, we were scheduled to make inmate apparel. With your experience, you stepped up to the plate and hit a home run. When we had to start a second shift and didn’t have enough help, you again hit a home run by running second shift by yourself. When we finally did start making officer pants, it again was your experience that got us through. … You were instrumental in the success that Pender Sewing plant enjoys.” Attending the celebration were Carpenter; Martin; Carpenter’s mother; his minister, Pastor Joshua J. Haire Jr. of First Missionary Baptist Church in Southern Pines, and Haire’s wife, L’Tonya; Carpenter’s church mother, Eva McNeil; correctional officers and special guests. Carpenter ended the celebration by thanking God and quoting Proverbs 3:5, 6.
