STAN HUNT: Have Your Fun, Annika, Then Get Back to LPGA

My, my. First Ms. Burk caused a storm by wanting to join Augusta.

Now we’re on the event of another invasion into the world of men, by golfer Annika Sorenstam.

Sorenstam is by far the best woman golfer in the world today, but for some reason, she needs to test her skills against the men.

I’ve talked to many woman golfers, and until last Sunday, almost all favored her playing. Only one, a woman from Canada playing out at The Carolina, said she thought Sorenstam should have been made to qualify, like all the rest of the participants.

Of course, almost all the men I’ve talked to did not want Sorenstam to cross the line. But some were kind and said, “More power to her. If she can play at that level, let her play.”

I’m afraid I am not of that ilk.

True, Sorenstam is a wonderful player. She might be side-by-side with the amazing Mickey Wright as the all-time best of the women.

But why challenge the men? Did some man challenge her to play? If so, I haven’t heard of it.

When I was a young man, I didn’t see any woman running to the local draft board to take my place, as the Army took two years of my life and put me in harm’s way. I would have gracefully bowed and let her ahead of me.

But what is it about some women that makes them want to join a men’s anything?

If Sorenstam plays well and makes the cut, will others line up and try their hands at it? If she does poorly and shoots in the 80s, will it dampen our outlook toward the LPGA?

I doubt it — so what is all the fuss about?

Babe Zaharias tried it in the 1940s and did not fare so well. In her day, she was the top of her class on the women’s tour.

I saw the latest Golf Digest, which showed weightlifting and bulking up. I always thought women wanted to look like movie stars and models. I guess I was wrong again.

If Sorenstam fails at her try at the Colonial, I hope we won’t have to endure her joining some men’s weightlifting championship and have to go through this agony again.

So she can out-lift me and a million other senior men. So what?

I will still walk down the street, head held high, back straight and proud to be a male.

I’ve beaten women at golf and had women beat me at the game, but I didn’t mind in either instance.

But I never wanted to join the girls’ basketball team or run against them in track and field.

So where did I go wrong?

Of course, sports today is circus entertainment. Millions throng to see John Daly hit a ball over 300 yards, though he can’t win any more, and owners pay millions to have an over-the-hill Michael Jordan play.

So why not a woman in a men’s tournament?

I really don’t know. But one thing for sure is that I, too, will be at the TV tube watching.

I hope she hits her opening drive into the deep rough, fails to get out, and is on her way to a nice 81 or 82.

Go ahead and embarrass yourself, Annika, and then do me a favor. Stay off the men’s tour and do your thing on the LPGA.

That’s the way it should be, or they surely would never have started an LPGA in the first place.

Or do I still have it wrong?
