THE PILOT LIGHT: Blake Returned To SCC Board

State Sen. Harris Blake has been reappointed to the Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees.

The Moore County Board of Commis-sioners voted Monday to return Blake to the college board.

The commissioners also voted to reappoint Sharon King and Bonnie McPeake to the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

DEMOCRATS — Dr. Bill Newton, chairman of the Moore County Democratic Party, led the delegation attending the party’s 6th Congressional District convention Saturday at North Guilford High School.

County First Vice Chairman Mary Alice Wicker and Maureen Sutton, Julia Bambauer and Barbara Gomez also attended.

Delegates adopted a resolution supporting a suit filed against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by several states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas and by environmental groups. The suit cites the EPA for its failure to enforce the Clean Air Act.

During the convention delegates emphasized that Guilford County is among the communities where a high level of toxins is being released into the air.

BARRETT — Davie County Commissioner Dan Barrett is the latest Republican to join the race for the 2004 gubernatorial nomination.

George W. Little, a Southern Pines insurance executive, was the first Republican to announce his candidacy.

Little chairs the Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees and served as state secretary of natural and economic resources during the administration of Gov. Jim Holshouser.

Barrett, 44, made his announcement Monday in Mocksville. An employment attorney, Barrett said he is interested in leading state government out of its present fiscal unsteadiness. He said this could be done by concentrating on the “core mission” of education, health care, roads and law enforcement.

In addition to Little and Barrett, Republicans known to be considering a run for governor include state Senate leader Patrick Ballantine of Wilmington, Jim Cain, former president of the Carolina Hurricanes and a Raleigh attorney, and former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot.

Vinroot ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2000.

The GOP primary winner will face incumbent Democratic Gov. Mike Easley.

CAMPAIGN — Elizabeth Edwards, wife of U.S. Sen. John Edwards, was in California two days last week to seek support for her husband’s campaign for the 2004 Democratic nomination for president.

She has also traveled recently to Atlanta and to Iowa to campaign on the senator’s behalf.

SURPLUS — The county has declared a wrecked patrol car to be surplus property and has authorized the public works director to accept the $8,233.34 insurance payment. Public Works Director Phillip Boles estimated that it would cost more to repair the 2000 Crown Victoria Ford to workable condition and recommended acceptance of the insurance offer.

The patrol car was damaged in an accident on March 20.

The county commissioners approved the matter as part of their consent agenda at a May meeting.

AUDIT — In another consent agenda item, the commissioners have authorized a contract with the Cherry, Bekaert & Holland certified public accounting firm to conduct the 2002-03 audit of county finances.

The contract amount is $37,500. CB&H has held the contract for the past several years.
