Barrett Paces Patriots To Conference Lead

Patrick Barrett shot a three-under-par round of 69 at Gates Four Monday to help Pinecrest extend its lead in the Mid-Southeastern Conference golf standings.

The Patriot team score of 302 was 16 strokes better than second-place finisher Richmond County. Pinecrest takes a two-point lead in the standings over the Raiders into next Monday’s 2 p.m. match at Richmond Pines.

Other Patriot scores were a 73 by Jack Fields, a 79 by Tommy Lineberger and an 81 by Eric Sheerin.

Barrett’s bogey-free round included two birdies and an eagle when he one-hopped a sand wedge into the cup from about 100 yards out on the par-4 14th. The sophomore’s stroke average through five conference matches is 74.2, second to David Watkins of Richmond at 73.0. Fields is in third place at 74.4.

On the way home, Patriot coach Sandy Sackmann and her players talked about the need to consistently keep the team score under 300. They recorded a 293 in the previous week’s match played at Pinehurst No. 1.

“We definitely need to do that,” Barrett said, thinking ahead to the postseason. “We’re about two scores away from being a really good team and we have a lot of people that can do it.”

The complete team scores were Pinecrest 302, Richmond 318, Scotland 321, Jack Britt 325, Hoke 382, Douglas Byrd 390 and Seventy-First 524.

Conference standings

Pinecrest 38, Richmond 36, Jack Britt 28.5, Scotland 27.5, Douglas Byrd 15, Hoke 12, Westover 4, Seventy-First 2.
