Koford Makes Splash in Florida

Local dressage trainer Jim Koford won three out of four FEI (Inter-national) classes at the Ocala Horse Park in Florida last weekend, earning a 68-percent score with his stallion Donatelli II in the horse’s Grand Prix debut. Another stallion, Neostan, owned by Pineland Farm, was undefeated in the FEI small tour (Prix St. Georges and Intermediate).

Vick Heads to Florida

Koford’s business partner and assistant trainer Rebecca Vick of Southern Pines is heading to Wellington, Fla., next week for taping of the American Dressage Idol television series with Robert Dover. The show, originally scheduled for last October, was disrupted by a hurricane.

Vick, 25, is one of four contestants, chosen from over 400 applicants, who will live together and work with Dover on their FEI horses for three weeks. The winner earns a position as Dover’s assistant rider for a year, in addition to valuable prizes including a $75,000 camper. The show is a cross between “The Apprentice” and “American Idol,” and is being produced by Broad Street Productions of New York.

Vick will ride Anton, a 15-year-old Warmblood gelding trained to Intermediate level. Rider bios and information are on www.-AmericanDressageStar.com.

Races Today

The Moore County Point-to-Point Races are taking place today, March 19, Hobby Field on Youngs Road. The brush, timber and flat races, with nearly $10,000 in purses, will be held in honor of the late Virginia Walthour Moss, who hosted these races for the past 17 years on her beautiful rolling hay field.

“Several top trainers are readying their horses,” said race director Joan Hopewell. “We have entries from Jonathan Sheppard, Doug Fout, Dale Jackson and Rebecca Beasley from Florida.”

Hobby Field gates open at 11 a.m. for a 1 p.m. post time. A carriage parade will bring the officials onto the field for a full afternoon of heart-pounding sport. General admission is $10 per person. Call 692-4441 for details.

Horse Trials

Sports fans can also take in the final day of the Southern Pines Horse Trials today, March 19, at the Carolina Horse Park on Montrose Road in Raeford.

The preliminary through advanced divisions will be show jumping for prizes and USEA/Adequan Gold Cup Series points.

Training horses will be galloping around their cross country course all day. Admission is free, food and shopping available in the vendor village.
