THE PILOT LIGHT: Student Appointed To West Point

Pinecrest High School student Jennifer Elyse Rocque has been accepted at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, Congressman Howard Coble has announced.

Rocque is the daughter of Michael and Cathy Rocque and lives on Rob Roy Road in Southern Pines.

One other student from the 6th District won an appointment — Ana Virginia Lopez of Denton, a student at South Davidson High School.

“I am delighted that these outstanding young women from the 6th District have been approved for admittance to the U.S. Military Academy,” Coble said in a statement released Friday. “Ana and Jennifer are to be commended for their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to both of them on this tremendous accomplishment.”

The 6th District includes Moore County.

EASLEY — Gov. Mike Easley has appointed Mary Peterson-Suri of Southern Pines to the N.C. Interagency Coordinating Council for Children from Birth to Five with Disabilities and Their Families.

Peterson-Suri is an emergency physician at Sandhills Emergency Physicians. She is a member of the Osteogenesis Imiperfecta Parents Support Association.

She received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin and her doctoral degree in medicine from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

The council assists the state in carrying out requirements for participating in Federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Amendments of 1991 and in providing early intervention services to children from birth through age five who are with or at risk for developing disabilities.

The council has 30 members, each serving a two-year term. The governor appoints all members.

CAMPAIGNS — Two legislative candidates kicked off their campaigns last week, two days before Moore County Republicans held their annual county convention.

State Rep. Richard Morgan was guest of honor at a wine-and-cheese party hosted by supporters at the Pinehurst Member’s Club Thursday evening. More than 220 persons attended.

Morgan, who has served in the legislature since 1991, is a former speaker of the state House of Representatives and currently serves as speaker pro tempore.

In Carthage his challenger, Joe Boylan, a Pinehurst businessman, held a campaign kickoff event at the old furniture store building on McReynolds Street.

The event included refreshments and music.

“I am excited about the progress our campaign is making,” Boylan said. “We are running a true grassroots campaign, meeting every voter possible.

“Moore County Republicans want a representative who keeps his word, opposes tax increases and stands for our traditional values. I am proud to be their candidate.”

Both men were among the candidates who briefly addressed the GOP county convention Saturday afternoon.

They will be subject to the Republican primary election in May.

BRAC — The Moore County Board of Commissioners on Monday tapped Assistant County Manager David Cotton to represent the county on the BRAC committee that looks into issues related to the proximity of military installations to neighboring communities.

BRAC is the Base Realignment Commission appointed by the U.S. Congress to determine which military bases are to be closed, continued, enlarged or changed.

Cotton told the board that the committee deals with such issues as housing, schools, and transportation and said it would be wise for Moore County “to have a seat at the table” during these discussions.

The commission has already indicated that Fort Bragg will not be closed. However, some changes are in effect for Pope Air Force Base, which is likely to be closed and its facilities turned over to Fort Bragg.

AGENDA — The Southern Pines Town Council will hold its agenda meeting today (Wednesday), starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday (today) in council chambers at Broad Street and New York Avenue.

The council will review the agenda for its regular meeting next Tuesday, March 14, that starts at 7 p.m. Council meetings are open to the public.
