Art in the Gardens is an exhibit of original artwork appropriate for outdoor display. The artists will be present for an opening reception on Saturday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the G. Victor and Margaret Ball Visitors Center in the Horticultural Gardens on the campus of Sandhills Community College (SCC).
Dee Johnson, coordinator of SCC’s Landscape Gardening Program, says a piece of outdoor artwork complements almost any garden setting. “The right combination of colors, textures and dimensions in a garden is what separates the mundane from the spectacular.”
Sculptures and other artwork are an integral part of the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens. “We have pieces made from materials such as metal, stone and clay,” said Johnson. “In addition to highlighting the natural beauty of a garden, art can provide a touch of whimsy, as you can see when you visit our Children’s Garden.”
Johnson said the artists participating in Art in the Garden are of high caliber. Some have work on permanent display in the Horticultural Gardens and the SCC campus.
Some of the artists exhibiting in this year’s Art in the Gardens are Clarence Finley, Carolyn Owen, Karen Tiede, Eric Bruton, Henry Grider, Mac Hulslander, Ruffin Hobbs and Mike Roig.
The event is sponsored by the Sandhills Horticultural Society and the SCC Visual Art Department. The works in the exhibition will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to support the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens and the college’s Visual Art Department.
The exhibit runs through the end of April. The Horticultural Gardens are open daily from daylight to dusk. Admission is free.
