Visiting in the K-2 classrooms was Barbara Cole, an English teacher at Sandhills Community College and author of several published children’s books.
Gail Haley, an author-illustrator of children’s books, visited the third through fifth grade classrooms. Haley has been the recipient of the Kate Greenway Medal, Kerlan Award, Parents’ Choice Award, and the Caldecott Medal.
A book writing and illustrating contest for third-through-fifth graders was held in conjunction with the Authors Program. A winner was chosen from each classroom for both the writer award and the illustrator award, and a luncheon was held in their honor.
Dr. Susan Purser, superintendent of Moore County schools, presented medals on red, white, and blue ribbons to the illustrators. Dick Westcott, chairman of the grants committee for the Public Education Foundation of Moore County, presented medals to the winners of the writing contest. Haley, the visiting author for these grades, attended the luncheon.
The Authors Program was made possible by a grant applied for by Pinehurst Elementary School teachers Denise Russell, Eileen Phelps and Cathy Wilkison. The grant was awarded by the Public Education Foundation of Moore County Inc.
This foundation holds an annual golf tournament, and receives private donations in order to award grants to Moore County teachers for special projects. More information about the foundation is available at mcpubedfoundation.org.
