The meet was highlighted by a few performances that were pleasing to the coaches for the early season and the cold weather.
In the field events, Union Pines junior Brittany Ray continued her early-season successes in the shot and discus, with a personal best of 35-foot-11 in the shot put and a throw of 90 feet in the discus. Ray痴 throw of 97-11 in the Green Hope Invitational two weeks ago, along with her shot put effort qualifies her for the 3-A Regional competition.
Natasha Bethune of the Vikings had a regional qualifying jump of 16-6 in the long jump.
For the Vikings, Charee Norris won the high jump at 4-6, and Lindsey Call and Kelly Chavis cleared 4-4.
Kiana Smith put the shot 31-0 and Jennifer Sutton jumped 13-0 in the long jump for the Vikings.
Other Vikings had good performances in the running events, Norris won the 100-meter dash (13.9), Maggie Powers won the 200-meter dash (32.0), Dominque Andrews the 400-meter dash (1:09), Bonnie MacDonald the 800-meter run (3:05), Ashley Trudeau the 1600-meter run (7:09) and MacDonald the 3200-meter run.
In the hurdle races, Bethune won the 100-meter hurdles (17.11), while Brittany Prewette was first in the 300-meter hurdles (58.0).
Coach Blake Smith of O誰eal was pleased with his young Falcon performers Kathy Hendricks and Kelly Fowler in the sprints, and Chavis, Simpson, Zhang and Strunk in the relays.
Smith also said M. O奪onnell, M. Pendley in the 400, K. Terry in the distance events and L. Puleo in the shot and discus performed well.
The relays saw the Vikings run 12:00 in the 3,200, 53.7 in the 400 and 1:54.17 in the 800. The O誰eal girls had times of 1:00.1 in the 400, 2:09 in the 800 and 13:50 in the 3,200.
The boy痴 events were highlighted by the day痴 last event, the 3200 run. Brandon DiBianca of the Vikings won with a time of 10:29.1 and close behind was freshman Andy Whacker of O誰eal with a new school record of 10:32.5.
Two weeks ago DiBianca set a new Union Pines 3200 standard at 10:19. Scott DiMaio of Union Pines was second to DiBianca in the 1600 (5:11.8) and won the 800 in 2:15.8. Brandon Thompson of The O誰eal School was first in the 400 (54.33) followed by teammate Will McIlwain (58.8).
Jarred Burch of the Vikings was the fastest sprinter, winning the 100 in 11.36, followed closely by teammate D. J. Patterson in 11.67 and Matt Williams of O誰eal third in 12.28. In the hurdle races, B.J. McLeod, last year痴 bronze medalist in the 3-A state meet won the 110 in 15.71, while Evan Roddenberry was first in the 300 in 49.3, as the Vikings took both events.
In the relay events, O誰eal won the 3,200 in a time of 9:45, while Union Pines ran a 10:08.6; Union Pines took the 800 in a time of 1:43.66 with O誰eal finishing in 1:49.5; and Union Pines took first in the 400 with a time of 44.67, while O誰eal finished in 46.96.
The field event highlights for Union Pines included Chad Norris 19-1 in the long jump, John Bivans 109-0 in the discus and T.J. Powers 37-10 in the shot put.
