SANDHILLS BEST BETS: Young People’s Fine Art Festival

In celebration of “Art in Schools” Month, the awards ceremony and opening reception for the Arts Council of Moore County’s 8th annual Young People’s Fine Arts Festival opens Friday, March 5 at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Campbell House Galleries.

The exhibit features the best artwork by over two hundred Moore County students. Sponsored by George W. Little & Associates, the young people’s artistic endeavors will be on display through March 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21. The Campbell House Galleries are located at 482 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines.

Celtic Music

Crockan Crayee, a Moore County Celtic band, plays Sunday at Dugans Pub, Pinehurst, and Wednesday at 195, a restaurant in Southern Pines.

The trio of musicians feature traditional Irish music on fiddle, flute, whistle, guitar and banjo. Fiddler Al McCanless will throw in some old-time tunes as well, accompanied by his son, Wil McCanless on guitar and banjo. Michael Mahan plays flute, whistle and bodhran (an Irish drum).

Crockan Crayee will play 6-8:30p.m. Sunday at Dugans Pub, 20 Market Square, Pinehurst, and 7-9p.m. Wednesday at 195, next to Nature's Own, 195 Bell Avenue, Southern Pines.

Moore Housing Benefit

Cafe Diva will host a benefit evening on Saturday, March 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. Music will be provided by Tom “Lefty” Compa with Bill Hopkins, as well as the group known as “Movin’ Through.” Contributions are to benefit Moore Housing Partnership, a non-profit organization with the mission of eliminating substandard housing in Moore County.

Auction Fund-Raiser

Eugene’s Towing and Harvest Church will host a benefit auction for cancer patient David Underwood on Saturday, March 6 at the National Guard Armory in Southern Pines. Talberts Catering will be serving at 9 a.m., the auction is at 11 a.m. and singing begins at 5 p.m.

Featured groups include The Locklears, the Millers, the Pierce Family Singers and Soul Purpose as well as Fishers of Men.
