Leading parts are performed by Kelly Bradshaw as the White Swan, “Odette” and Ashley Sevits as the Black Swan, “Odile.” Guest artists Christopher Weisler dances the role of Prince Siegfried.
The familiar music by Tchaikovsky was composed in 1874-75. The “Swan Lake” of this century reflects the unique collaboration of two choreographers, Petipa and Ivanov.
The story centers around Prince Siegfried, in search of romance, as he is hunting with friends. They find a mist-covered lake on which swans float. Just as the prince is about to shoot an arrow at them, the swans suddenly transform into girls with Odette as Swan Queen.
This enchanted lake is the domain of the evil presence, Rothbart. One half man, one half owl, Rothbart has transformed the girls into swans by day, but they remain girls at night. If Rothbart dies, the girls stay swans forever. According to the tale, only true love for the Swan Queen will break the spell and free the girls and Prince Siegfried vows his love to Odette.
In the next act of “Swan Lake” is set at the Royal Court. The Queen Mother demand s the prince choose a bride from the court’s princesses.
After some pressure, he entertains some of the guests and, believing his dance partner is Odette, the Swan Queen, he vows marriage to her.
After the guise is linked to Rothbart, the prince, deceived, is heart-broken and goes back to the lake to see the unhappy ending.
Tickets are $12 and may be purchased at the Coliseum Box Office.
