Pinecrest’s choral program has embarked on a new venture that has implemented a new talent show for the choral singers of Moore County Schools (specifically the singers that feed into the Pinecrest Choirs) to be featured as soloists or small ensembles.
The show will be open for all elementary, middle and high school choral singers in the Moore County School System that are either in the Pinecrest Choirs or are in programs that will feed into the Pinecrest Choirs.
“The objective is to promote individual success in a comfortable and accessible environment and encourage those who sing or attend to consider making plans to join the Pinecrest Choirs as they enter the school as rising 9th graders,” said Wright.
There will be three categories of participants, which will include elementary, middle and high school. Seven soloists or small ensembles, per category, will be selected to perform in the Vocal Talent Show, based on their successful auditions.
The first prize winners of each category will win $50 and a trophy, while second and third place winners will earn trophies. The three judges for this year’s show are: Dr. Terri Sinclair from Sandhills Community College, Dr. Gary Wright and Jennifer Thomas, both from UNC Pembroke,
Participants will be judged for their musicality, difficulty level of the song, vocal technique and health and their preparation/knowledge of notes and rhythms.
The Vocal Talent Show will operate as follows:
There will be one audition the week of the talent show in which interested students will be required to sing the song they hope to perform on the show. Each will be categorized by level and audition. Results will be posted and e-mailed to teachers on Thursday morning, March 20.
In order to ensure that the running time of the show is not excessive, only selected students from the auditions will be invited to participate in the actual show. The adjudicators will select seven soloists/groups for each category. Duets, trios, quartets, etc. are encouraged and welcome. (Prizes, though, will be split as the group sees best fit.)
Maximum length of the song is three minutes. There will be a minimum of two judges at auditions and three judges at the March 22 show to maintain objectivity. All participants must use the voice as their primary instrument. An accompanist will be provided for auditions and the show. Accompaniment tapes may be used, but an authentic performance with integrity between performer(s) and accompanist is recommended.
Difficulty level, vocal health, preparation and musicality will be strongly considered when assessing the student’s performance. All styles of music are welcome as long as the material is of good taste and is educationally acceptable. Students chosen to sing in the show will be randomly placed into concert performance order. Awards will be granted as follows:
There will be three winners chosen for each category. The first place winner for each category will receive a $50 cash gift and a trophy, while the second and third place winners will receive a trophy. All gifts will be awarded at the end of the show.
The evening will also feature several choirs from throughout the community. Such choirs as the Pinecrest Chamber Ensemble, Sotto Voce, The Sandhills Music Academy Children’s Choir, SCORE, and West Pine Middle School Choirs will also sing as entertainment on the show. General admission is $6 while senior/student admission is $5. Moore County School employees are admitted free of charge. Call 692-6554 for further details.
