Village Long-Range Plan Meeting Set for March 27

The Pinehurst Comprehensive Long-Range Plan Steering Committee has scheduled a public informational meeting for Wednesday, March 27, to continue public discussion about a comprehensive long-range plan.

The meeting, which is expected to last about two hours, will begin at 7 p.m. in the assembly room of the Village Hall.

It will be the third public meeting to discuss possible strategies for the village’s future. This meeting is intended to introduce a new topic, transportation, and to continue discussion of other components of the plan.

A public informational meeting in January on conservation issues (natural resources, open space and historic resources) attracted about 60 people, and there seemed to be general support for the possible conservation strategies.

A second informational meeting in February on developmental issues (community structure, village development, residential development and regulatory review) attracted about 300 residents. While most discussion focused on the possibility of expanding the village center — a strategy that most speakers opposed — there was also discussion about other issues.

At the March 27 meeting, the Steering Committee — a group of residents and village officials working to establish an action plan for Pinehurst’s future — is interested in hearing from residents about transportation issues, including traffic congestion.

The meeting will involve a brief summary of research and recommendations prepared by Planimetrics, the planning consulting firm from Avon, Conn., selected by the Village Council to coordinate the preparation of the long-range plan. The bulk of the meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to discuss the recommendations and suggest alternatives. Comments received will be considered by the Steering Committee as the plan is being formulated.

Future community meetings will be held to discuss topics now being analyzed by Planimetrics, including community facilities, public water and sewer, storm drainage, communications, community character, and implementation techniques.

The long-range plan is expected to be adopted in the fall of 2002. The village will use it to guide land-use decisions and encourage the coordinated conservation and development of the community.
