Sketchbook Makes Local Appearance

The rock, light alternative sound of Sketchbook comes to O’Donnell’s Pub, New Hampshire Avenue, Southern Pines on Friday, March 8.

The group, which consists of Tommy Whitesell and the lead singer guys and local musicians Cecil Monroe of Robbins and Will McCanless of Seagrove, first gained national recognition with their 1999 song inspired by the men’s golf championship at Pinehurst, “U.S. Open Blues.”

Since that week, the four-member band has worked on other projects including the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life.” The group wrote and performed an original song called “Difference” at the Moore County event that eventually made its way to the national CD commemorating the Relay all acros the U.S. The song is listed with such groups as Katrina and the Waves and Huey Lewis and the News.

The band has also played with many national acts such as Shania Twain, Sister Hazel, Uncle Kracker, Soul Decision, Josh Joplin and has performed at venues such as the Greensboro Coloseum, Walnut Creek, The Ritz and The Brewery in Raleigh.

The band is currently working on a new CD to be completed in the Spring. All four members write and sing, which offers a diverse combination of sounds.

The band performs locally once every six weeks and fills the rest of the time with rehearsals and other gigs.

The O’Donnell’s show starts around 9 p.m. and admission is charged at the door.
