Shriberg Home on Annual Garden Club Tour

The Southern Pines Garden Club will host its 52nd annual Home and Garden tour on Wednesday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One of the homes on this year’s tour belongs to Joel and Sandy Shriberg.

Located on top of one of the highest slopes of Fairwoods on 7, this modern brick home offers a charming front garden full of different textures and colors and a fish pond that seems to flow into the house itself. The outside literally becomes part of the living room with its gigantic glass wall framing a view of water and the rolling greens of the golf course.

An impressive stone fireplace gives a dramatic touch to the open room which includes the dining and kitchen areas, making it perfect for casual but elegant living.

An array of antique toys, collected over the years in the Boston area, add to the charming informal touch as does the collection of sandwich glass and the assorted Santa Claus figures. Trompe l’oeil scenes by Dottie Murdock, on the walls near the free-standing staircase, continue the garden theme, as do the assortment of floral prints to be seen throughout the house.

Beyond the master bedroom with its garden colors is an oversized bathroom, complete with sauna, whirlpool bath and an exercise area.

Beyond the stone patio, which wraps around the back of the house, is a rock pool and waterfall. A built-in barbecue to one side serves as a reminder of how much the outdoors plays its part in the casual living style of this couple.

Other homes on the tour include those of Centre and Jean Rae Holmberg, Joseph and Barbara McAuley, Jessie Mackay and her husband, Paul Rudovsky, Terry and Susan Brown and Eddie and Kea Meacham.

All proceeds from the tour will benefit local beautification and special restoration projects. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the tour. Tickets may be ordered via the website at www.Sandhills.org/events/tour2001 or call 692-3965. They are also available at the Campbell House, the Country Bookshop in Southern Pines and Gentlemen’s Corner in Pinehurst. In addition, lunch will be available at the Country Club of North Carolina beginning at 12:30 p.m. for an additional cost.
