Collins Throws 2-Hitter As Mustangs Beat Cavs
By George Lawther: Special to The Pilot Mustang pitcher, Spencer Collins, allowed only two hits as the North Moore High School baseball team defeated Burlington Cummings by a score of 10-0 on Tuesday night in a game played at Robbins.
It was the first conference game for both teams and the first win of the season for the Mustangs. The 10-run rule ended the game after five innings of play.
North Moore started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Webster Davis singled, Collins walked, and Kevin Smith was safe on an error, scoring Davis. Nathan Seawell then singled to score Collins. He stole second and advanced to third on an overthrow, as Smith scored from third, giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
Neither team scored in the second and third innings.
North Moore scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Seawell was safe on an error, and Cale Cassady doubled to score Seawell and then stole third.
Timmy McCrimmon walked and stole second, and Heath Williams walked. Cassady scored on a passed ball, and Kirby Maness walked to load the bases again.
McCrimmon then scored from third on a passed ball, and Davis singled to score two more runs for the Mustangs. Smith ground out to short, but Maness came home on an overthrow at third base. Seawell then hit a triple to center field to score Davis.
The Mustangs led at the end of four innings by a score of 10-0. The Cavaliers went down in order in the top of the fifth inning, and North Moore had the win.
The Mustangs’ record improved to 1-3, (1-0 in the Central Tar Heel 1-A Conference), while the Cavaliers’ record dropped to 0-2 (0-1 in the conference).
North Moore’s game with Durham School of the Arts was postponed on Wednesday. The Mustangs are scheduled to play River Mill at home tonight at 7 p.m.
