Mustangs Drop Two

By George Lawther: Special to The Pilot

It was a day of long ball at North Moore High School Thursday. It was also a day for two defeats for the homestanding Mustangs.

The Mustang baseball team completed a game that was suspended on Wednesday at East Montgomery, and then played another game against the Eagles at Robbins on Thursday.

East Montgomery won the first game, 11-6, and then prevailed in the second game as well by a score of 11-5.

The long ball accounted for most of the scoring for both teams in the second game.

Jacob McCaskill hit two home runs, one in the second inning and another in the fourth, to drive in four runs for the Eagles, and Billy Kennedy hit a two-run shot over the left-centerfield fence in the third inning for East Montgomery.

Spencer Collins hit two home runs for the Mustangs to drive in four of the five runs, and a double by Webster Davis accounted for the other run for North Moore.

The Eagles had built up a 10-run lead when Collins finally put the Mustangs on the board with his first home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Collins then took over the pitching duties and held the Eagles to just one more run, which came in the top of the seventh inning.

He helped his cause with a second two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late, and East Montgomery won by a score of 11-5.

“We’re playing a little better,” Mustang coach Willis Barrett said following the game. “We have a young team. They will get better with experience.”

The Mustangs record is now 0-3, and the Eagles’ record improved to 4-1 for the season.

North Moore will open its conference schedule at home on Tuesday against Burlington Cummings.
