Vass Takes 11-12 Girls County Tourney Title BY HUNTER CHASE: Sports Editor Vass used defense and a big offensive explosion in the first half to take the championship of the Moore County Parks and Recreation Department 11-12 girls’ basketball tournament. In the game played at West Pine Middle School, the Vass girls posted 26 first-half points while holding West End to two points in taking a 26-2 first-half lead in the season-ending tournament. Vass used the long bomb, connecting on six three-pointers in the contest. Chief sharpshooter for the Vass squad was Shamecco Mosely, who finished with 11 points, including three treys. All her points came in the first half. LindsayCameron finished with nine points, all on three-pointers for the Vass squad. Leondra Smith led West End with eight points and Morgan Saunders with seven points. With Mosely hitting for eight points and Diane Johnson scoring six, Vass sprinted out to a 14-2 first-quarter lead. The only points for West End came on a two-point bucket by Saunders. In the second quarter, Vass got points from five different players, while holding West End scoreless. Courtney Sauer hit a two-pointer, Cameron nailed a three-pointer, Mosely added another bomb from behind the three-point line and Kellie Furr and Tyronesha Cole had two points each. In the third quarter, Cameron hit two treys and Rebecca Mendiguren had a bucket to push the Vass margin to 34-8. West End came alive on the offensive end with Smith scoring four points and Saunders scoring two points. West End outscored the Vass squad 9-3 in the fourth quarter. Smith had two free throws and a two-pointer, while Saunders added a free throw and a bucket. Onya Horton scored a bucket to account for West End’s fourth-quarter scoring. Vass got one point from Johnson and a two-point bucket from London Patterson for its three points.
