Clouded by Distortion

Councilman Lapins had the title but little else right for his June 4 column. He promised to explain why he supports annexation, yet never delivered.

Rather, he dwelt on one irrelevant point after another. He was right on one point -- involuntary annexation is not in Pinewild's economic interest.

The commission he cites "endorsing" the archaic state statute closed more than 10 years ago. In fact, the commission's endorsement he proudly cites originates with a July 1961 report I finally found on a Web page titled "cyber cemetery." So, a 46-year-old endorsement by a defunct organization, in the case of a 48-year-old statute, is the premise of his support.

Of note, the commission cited the N.C. statute solely because those being annexed had no vote in the process -- Mr. Lapins' style of democracy.

Annexation is a tool to manage growth and provide basic municipal services. Pinewild and the other gated communities Mr. Lapins delights in ridiculing provide buffers to the village, have high architectural standards and enhance the village's character as a golf destination. Even the commission he so proudly touted referred to annexation as a tool for growth.

I am never surprised when a politician easily dismisses others' interests while seeking to get into my wallet. Lapins displays unmitigated gall to offer me a vote after he has picked my pocket. How would he like someone who tries this approach with his money?

It appears he wants Pinewild residents' money to do what the village has not been able to do within their budget. Talk about economic self-interest. This confrontation cannot be attributed to Pinewild residents. We did not start this, but we certainly will use the courts to protect our rights.
