Only four states allow forced, involuntary annexation. Forty-six states have arrived at the belief that municipal growth can be better served by other means. This North Carolina law is truly archaic and oppressive.
Pinehurst's actions are clearly a land and money grab that has been delayed by conditional requirements. They are eagerly keeping a running count of the number of homes completed in Pinewild in order to initiate their action.
One must further realize that their action is not mandated by North Carolina statutes; it is simply their decision to exercise this aggressive act. The Village is looking to acquire Pinewild to obtain approximately $1 million in tax revenues with essentially no cost to the Village.
Moore County currently provides adequately all the services to Pinewild. Fire service is provided through Pinehurst as directed by the county. Pinewild pays Moore County for all these services, including fire service. No additional services required by Pinewild come from Pinehurst.
Pinewild citizens contribute significantly to Pinehurst by patronizing their businesses. Further, we donate considerable time and experience working with organizations in the village, as well as making monetary contributions. I suggest we give much more than we receive, or use, of Pinehurst amenities.
Once again, Pinewild citizens must assert a fact that seems hard for the Pinehurst Village Council to digest. The overwhelming majority of people bought and built in Pinewild because of the Pinewild community design and available internal amenities.
Pinehurst is an added attraction, as are other locations, but far from the primary appeal of Pinewild.
