In the garden is a stake driven by James Walker Tufts in 1895 to mark the center of his new village. The town boundaries were drawn in a one-mile circle from this point.
At the entrance, across from the Holly Inn, a plaque designates Pinehurst Village as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the United States Department of Interior. The plaque states that the "site (village old town) possesses national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America."
In 1991, the garden became a living memorial with the creation of a fund to honor and memorialize friends and relatives. Donations are recorded in the Memory Book located in the Tufts Archives of the Given Memorial Library. Anyone who would like to make a memorial donation can call Carol Van Zanten at 295-0901. Checks should be payable to the Pinehurst Garden Club and sent to her at P.O. Box 277, Pinehurst, NC 28370.
The Pinehurst Garden Club, which has played a major role in the design and landscaping of the garden, maintains the grounds. With winding paths, welcoming benches, and beautiful camellias, azaleas and other decorative shrubs and trees, the Memorial Garden is a Village jewel.
"The public is invited to enjoy its restful ambience," says a spokesman.
