St. Joseph of the Pines to Manage Florida Retirement Community

The management team of St. Joseph of the Pines has been selected to oversee operations of John Knox Village, a continuing care retirement community located in Tampa, Fla.

John Knox Village is a "sister" community within Catholic Health East, St. Joseph of the Pines' parent organization. This role is consistent with St. Joseph's mission of providing outstanding senior living and health services, it said in a news release.

John Knox Village of Tampa is a senior living community built in 1968. Through the years, the community continued to grow to its current capacity with 325 independent residences, 123 assisted living residences and 163 skilled nursing residences. Additionally, the community has 39 residences in its memory support unit.

About 700 residents live in the community.

In 1988, John Knox Village was purchased by St. Joseph's Hospital/St. Joseph's Healthcare Centers Inc., part of Catholic Health East. In the last two years, St. Joseph's Hospital considered different ways in which the John Knox Village community could be managed.

Late last year, a number of organizations were viewed as an alternative to the organization's current management structure. St. Joseph of the Pines notified St. Joseph's Hospital that it wanted to be considered for this opportunity.

"We had been giving some consideration to availing ourselves of an opportunity to expand the number of communities we are currently managing," said John Capasso, president and CEO of St. Joseph of the Pines. "When I found out about this prospect within Catholic Health East, we threw our hat in the ring for the chance.

"We responded to the request for a proposal and traveled to the Tampa community. We are grateful that we were selected to manage John Knox Village because there is a good match between the skill sets of our management team and the ongoing operational needs of John Knox Village," said Capasso.

St. Joseph of the Pines, sponsored by the Sisters of Providence, owns and operates the St. Joseph Health Center, the Villas at Pine Knoll, Belle Meade Resort Retirement, the Coventry and Providence Place I through V.

It is also expanding the Pine Knoll campus by adding 24 senior apartments through a historical renovation.

St. Joseph of the Pines has been providing housing and medical services to the Sandhills community for more than 55 years.

Isaac Mallah, president and CEO of St. Joseph Baptist Health Care System, led the search for a team to manage John Knox Village.

"We looked at a few different organizations to manage John Knox Village," he said. "Ultimately, St. Joseph of the Pines was selected because we thought its team was the best fit due to the similarities between our cultures and missions. We have great confidence in their ability to bring their expertise to John Knox Village."

Ken Cormier, chief operating officer of St. Joseph of the Pines, was tapped to lead John Knox Village. Cormier will be relocating to Tampa, where he will have a daily presence in its management.

Cormier is a licensed nursing home administrator in Florida and previously managed Westminster Communities in Bradenton and Winter Park Towers in Orlando.

"Ken Cormier is the right person to lead John Knox Village at this time," said Capasso, who will assume Cormier's responsibilities during the engagement.

In addition to Cormier's daily presence at John Knox Village, other members of St. Joseph of the Pines' management team will make regular visits to the community and assist in the development of operating goals.

Services provided to the local community's residents will not be affected by this opportunity.
