The format, as usual, is 36 holes of two-person better-ball, which is the best score on each hole by one player of the team. No handicaps are used and the field will be flighted following play on Saturday. Winning teams in each flight will be determined by the 36-hole total. Special events include closest to the pin and longest drive.
The entry fee is $155 per person but is only $145 if entries are received by June 30. These fees include carts and beverages for both days, lunch on Saturday, trophies and prizes, and a welcome bag. Gift certificates redeemable in the golf shop will be awarded at the completion of play.
A practice round at reduced rates is available for entrants on Friday, July 28. Tee times may be arranged by calling 949-3000, extension 6.
The tournament will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the field is limited to 124 golfers. The deadline for entry is July 15. For information, or to obtain entry forms, call Bailey Vaughan at 295-6582.
Past beneficiaries of the tournament include Duke Comprehensive Care Center, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, N.C. Jaycee Burn Center, Boys Homes of North Carolina and local community support.
Devils Ridge: Ron Carpenter, an amateur from Durham, edged professional Jim Streckfus of Pinebluff to win the overall championship of the Devils Ridge Senior Open presented by Calvert in Holly Springs.
Carpenter, the 2003 Senior Associate Player of the Year, opened with a 1-under-par 71 that gave him a one-stroke lead over Streckfus but used a 70 in the second round to ice the win with a 36-hole score of 141. Streckfus shot bookend 72s for 144.
Herb Conway of Whispering Pines tied for sixth with 150. Ken Eichele of Pinehurst tied for 14th with 152. Charles Daley of Whispering Pines tied for 18th with 154. Chick Evans of Pinehurst tied for 20th with 155. Hal Dugenske of Whispering Pines was 23rd with 157.
Bob Sandler of Pinehurst was at 161. Bick Long of Pinehurst and Dick Wilson of Whispering Pines were at 162, and Bob Flynt of Southern Pines was at 164. Dean Donley of Whispering Pines shot 168, and Terry Ward of Jackson Springs shot 173.
Streckfus won the overall professional title and $250. He also won $200 as low professional in the 50 to 55 age division.
Interclub Play: Carolinas Interclub defending champion Chapel Hill Country Club will join 84 other Carolinas Golf Association member clubs in hopes of advancing to the Carolinas Interclub Finals on Oct. 29.
Chapel Hill will attempt to become the first club to defend the title successfully in the Interclub’s nine-year history.
The Carolinas Interclub pits area clubs against one another at match play in their respective geographic regions. Twenty-two zones have been created throughout the Carolinas which will host three or four teams who will compete in home-and-home matches.
Teams will compete at four-ball and singles match play with the most cumulative four-ball and individual match play points determining the winner of each match.
The winner of the most home-and-home matches in each group will advance to the single elimination playoffs which will conclude with the championship match.
The champion club will receive a championship trophy along with the perpetual Carolinas Interclub trophy for one year.

Lance Two-Man: Entries are now being accepted for the fifth annual Lance Two-Man Team Championship July 8 and 9 at Stonebridge Golf Club just outside Charlotte.
The tourney is one of the premier best-ball championships in the greater Charlotte region and is expected to draw a field of about 70 teams. Competition will be in two divisions — gross and net — with a total purse of $5,000 in gift certificates from Edwin Watts Golf. All golfers with verifiable handicaps of 0-16 are eligible to enter.
The format is 36 holes of best ball, with gift certificates awarded to the top 10 teams in the gross division and top 10 teams in the net division.
“Last year’s event drew a strong field with some of the best golfers in the area,” said Tournament Director Dennis McCormac. “Lance has provided great support to the tournament over the years, and I think people realize this is a quality event.”
Entry fee is $165 per person or $330 per team and includes cart and green fees, range balls, Lance snacks, food on Saturday, and prizes. Practice rounds are available that week for $25.
