Fairway Notebook: Three Players Card Aces

Holes-In-One: Judy Barrenger, a member of Southern Pines, scored a hole in one on the 89-yard seventh hole, using her 7-wood. Elaine Workman and Flo DeSandy were her playing partners.

Gary Tanner, a member of Pinewild, aced the 148-yard 15th hole, of the Magnolia Course, on May 22. He used his 6-iron and playing with him were Phil Walthall, Bill Montgomery, and Larry Perkinson.

Dick Keener, a member of Pinewild, carded a hole-in-one on the 134-yard eighth hole, of the Holly Course.

He used a 6-iron and his witnesses were Jim Pryor and Mick Gruin.

Seven Lakes: The 9-Hole Lakers played a three-week Spring Tournament with a format that used the best two of three nine-hole rounds for scoring. Sharing first place, with a tie at 62, were Carol Meszaros, Evie Launhardt and Marion Donnelly.

Other winners were: Flight 1 — Fay Desautels, 63. Flight 2 — Nancy Blythe and Ellen Smith tied at 67. Flight 3 — Dot Baetzhold, 67.

The 18-Hole Women’s Association played a team event with two scores needed on even holes and three on odd holes. The winners: Joyce Charles, Magda Sonderfan, Carol Yeoman, Ione Katz, 147; Marge Blake, Bev Needler, Kathy Goodman, Mary McLain, 154; Annette Schall, Jean Keating, Edie Starkey, Dot Sparke, 160.

Moore County Interclub: The second Interclub I matches were played on May 25 at Whispering Pines with the following results: Points — Pinewild, 78; Southern Pines, 75.5; CC of North Carolina, 72.5; Foxfire, 71; Whispering Pines, 68.5; Pinehurst, 67.5.

The inaugural Interclub II matches were played at the CC of Whispering Pines with the following winners: Whispering Pines, 38; Mid South, 36.5; Pinehurst, 35.5; Pinewild, 34.

Southern Pines: Milli Johnson won the Par Seekers Match Play Tournament. The format was an elimination event that was played over four weeks.

Louise Pierce is the 2006 State Play Day winner with a net score of 69. Twenty-nine players participated on May 2.

The Par Seekers played a Nassau Tournament on May 23 with the following winners: Flight 1 — Overall: Gross — Cathy Murphy, 88. Front Nine: Net — Bonnie Quesenberry, 32. Back Nine: Net — Sharon Hinkle, Pat Billingham, Louise Pierce, all tied at 37. Flight 2 — Overall: Gross — Joan McCreedy, 91. Front Nine: Net — Susan Ray, 34. Back Nine: Net — Ann Kendall and Judy Barrenger tied at 36. Flight 3 — Overall: Gross — Jeanice Snyder, 100. Front Nine: Net — Penny Burke, 33. Back Nine: Net — Milli Johnson, 36. Flight 4 — Overall: Gross — Stella Karshner, 105. Front Nine: Net — Pat Hoffman, 31. Back Nine: Net — Rita Mae Taylor, 39.

Knollwood: The Sandblasters played in a two-man best ball event on May 23. The top finishers were Paul Sanger and Clark Russell, 25; John Mannion and Bob Millan, 26 (MOC); Bob Edwards and Don Green, 26, (MOC).

Jim Braunscheidel won low gross at 36. Carl Armlet had the best net at 28. Rick Stone eagled the fifth hole. Birdies were recorded by Mac Andrews on hole 1; Jim Braunscheidel on the holes 1 and 3; Bob Edwards, Paul Sanger and Joe Alden on hole 3; and Chuck Crum and Bob Huff on hole 9.

On May 30, the Sandblasters played an individual tournament with the following top finishers: Flight 1— John Mannion, 29; Paul Aschmetat, 30; Bob Mellinger, 31. Flight 2 — Charles Childers, 30; Al High, 31 (MOC); Tom Delehaunty, 31 (MOC). Flight 3 — Bob Millan, 29; Len Grasso, 30; Ron Stevenson, 32. Flight 4 — Bob Hoff, 26; Phil Colwell, 31; Don Green 32.

Ron Flock and John Mannion shared low-gross Ross honors at 38. Bob Hoff won low net at 26. Paul Aschmetat birdied 1, and Ron Flock birdied 5, 6 and 8.

Whispering Pines: The Pinettes played a low gross tournament with the following top finishers: Flight 1 — Karen Hobbs and Dot DeMasi, tied at 80; Isabelle Daley, 82. Flight 2 — Sallie Daughtrey, 87; Nancy Donley, 91; Anne Jones, 93. Flight 3 — Ginny Campling, 100; Claire Nacca and Jan Flesca, tied at 101. Flight 4 — Millie Mills, 99; Edie Azar, 103; Barbara Gruninger, 106.

The Men’s Association played a best ball game on May 31, with one ball needed on par-5 holes, two on par-4 holes and three on par-3 holes. Tied at 112 were the teams of Bob Fetters, Tony Grose, Frank Carrara, and Jim Hays, and Art Woodward, Tommy Nacca, Joe Thomas, and Jack Jakucyk.

Whispering Woods: The Couples played a low net game with one best ball of the pair needed for scoring. Irene and Blake Hetterich won with 55, and Carol and Bob Carlson had 58.

The Women’s Golf Association played a game called Best Front or Back. Geri Scalia won with 30. Tied for second, at 32, were Mary Ella Miller and Tina Burns.

The Men’s Golf Association played on May 24, in a game where two best balls were needed on each hole. The winners: First — Fred Miller, Ken Pomeroy, Carl Williams and Don Schmidt, 113. Second — Charles Brady, Don Stuchell, Don Smedley, and John Roberts, 114.

On May 26, the game was two low-net balls on par-4 holes and three on par-3 and par-5 holes. The winners: Al Anderson, Don Schmidt, Bill Crump and Charles Brady, 91.

On May 29, the game was the combined low net score of each player with the following results: First — Werner Klingener, Dick Colegrove and Tom Rittenhouse, 281. Al Eisold, Charles Brady, Bud Henty and Joe Haas, 289.

Midland: The Men’s Golf Association played a Nassau Tournament on May 31, using two best balls of the foursome for scoring. Overall winners: Henry Fuhrmann, Jack Henderson, Bob Alcorn and Allen High, at 114. Front Nine winners: Jim Braunscheidel, Charles Childers, Jim Horne and Dick Heilman, 57. Back Nine winners: Ted Cadieu Jerry Kelly, Joe Alden and Dick Baird, 59.

Joel Rabdau won low gross with 78. Charles Cook won low net at 60. Birdies were carded by Paul Aschmetat on hole 1; Bill Moore on hole 6; Charles Cook on hole 13; Ted Cadieu, Paul Aschmetat and Allen High on hole 15; and Jim Braunscheidel on hole 16.

In the 9-Hole Skins game Bill Parke won on hole 7, Paul Hoffman on 8 and Dick Keyse on 9. Birdies were recorded by Jerry Kelly and Paul Aschmetat on hole 1; Bill Moore on hole 6; Charles Cook on 13; Ted Cadieu, Paul Aschmetat and Allen High on 15, and Jim Braunscheidel on 16.

The Ladies Golf Association played on May 18, in the Rally for a Cure, team play event. The game of the day was a selected hole, three player team, with 50 percent of each player’s handicap needed for scoring. The top finishers were: First — Joan Meyer, Doris Hoffmann, Margene Chapman, 13. Second — Pat Madeira, Barbara Mellinger, and Rosa Scheyett, tied at 16, with Carolyn Pratley, Renee McClure, Georgia Snow. Third — Joanne Rabdau, Steve Middlekauff, Jo Ann Hoff, 20. Fourth — Dorothy Smith, Lucy Patterson, and Linda Parke, tied at 21, with Barbara MacNamee, Gerda Pittinger, and Sue Hopkins.

Joan Meyer won closest to the pin on hole 2. Linda Parke birdied hole 2, Carolyn Pratley birdied holes 2 and 6, and Ginny Farrell birdied hole 6.

National: The Men’s Day results for May 27, are as follows:

Stableford: Peter Vanica, plus 3; Ray Ogden, plus 3; Rick Knight, plus 3; Bob Knorr, plus 2; Gary Gough, plus 1.

Skins: Rick Finnin, three; Chris Horne, Peter Vanica, and Peter Zimmermann, two each; Ray Ogden, Steve Points, and Lee Henningson, one each.

Peter Vanica won low gross with 78. Low-net winners were Rick Knight and Ray Ogden, tied at 71, and Peter Zimmerman had 72.

Beacon Ridge: Lois Dole was the Beacon Cup winner for May with a net score of 66.

The Ladies of Beacon Ridge played a partners, low net, 9-hole contest, with the following results: First — Mary Lois Teyssier and Marilyn Holzerland, 29. Second — Sandra McDermott, and Joyce Loney, 31. Third — Gloria Stanley and Sonja White, tied at 32, with Marianne Foley and Lois Dole. Fourth — Ann Nueslein and Dawn Shapiro, 33.

Longleaf: The Women’s Association played a Beat the Pro Tournament on May 25. The individual players tried to beat the pro with their net scores. Those who did received a certificate, and a Longleaf logo ball.

In the 18-Hole division there was a four way tie at 63 for first place and the players were: Carol Crook, Jean Fish, Jean Gleason and Marian Morrison. Ruth Hansell won closest to the pin on hole 13 and Sally Emerine on hole 15. Carol Misegades won closest to the line.

In the 9-Hole division, Carol Bonyko was first at 30 and Lorraine Daost was second at 31. Rosemary Corcoran won closest to the pin on hole 2. Jean Baxter was closest to the line.

Doris Barclay chipped in on hole 7 and Joyce Leo on hole 18. Dottie Guckin birdied hole 2, Michelle Liveris hole 8, Marian Morrison hole 12 and Ruth Hansell on hole 13.

Jean Gleason, Sally Emerine, and Joyce Leo each birdied hole 15.

Pinehurst: The Silver Foils played a Red vs. White team event. The White Team won with 205 points. The Red Team had 191. Members of the White team were: Linn Ardner, Nancy Cassidy, Diane McCall, Dee Cregan, Nan Wood, Claire Gaston, Dian Moore, Katie Ryan, Elsie Jasinski, Dorothy Zihal, Joyce Harter, Tricia Johnson, Karen Plankar, Jane Forsyth, Shirley Wauters, Ann Nash, Mary Scott Arnold, Irene Corbin, Anne McKenzie, Judy Sanders, Mary Ann Mills and Judy Lewis.

On May 30, the game was one best ball of the foursome. The results were: First — Diane McCall, Marge Swinarton, Judy Lewis, Mary Scott Arnold. Second — Austine White, Pat Green, Kay Monteith, Dee Cregan. Third — Emma Howerton, Gay Griffith, Shirley Wauters, Dolores Muller, 59.

The Chippers played on Course No. 1 on May 25, and the game of the day was a captain’s choice. Lois Moore, Beth Bennington, Marge Frost and Pat Pierce won with a score of 44.

The Birdies played on Course No. 5, on May 30, in an AABB and CCDD contest. The game was two best ball on holes starting with T and F, and one best ball on all other holes.

The top finishers in the AABB division were: First — Sue Smith, Jane Wilkinson, Marion Mitchell, Cathy Hamblen, 91. Second — Linda Querec, Donna Tanner, Darya Glass, Shirley Kronbach, 92 (MOC).

Third — Bonnie Hanly, Bette Rycroft, Maureen Reeves, Tee Noggle, 92 (MOC). Fourth — Sara Sutton, Trish Christina, Blind Draw, Beth Bennington, 93.

The top finishers in the CCDD division were: First — Pat Durkee, Maggie Langley, Blind Draw, Jan Polisoto, 92 (MOC); Second — Audrae Thibodeau, Diane Ghekas, Glenna Pope, Jan Aruscavage, 92 (MOC). Third — Linda Bond, Marilyn Gordon, Ellie Ray, Claudia Wells, 93 (MOC); Fourth — Zona Willis, Ruth Graham, Joanne Drengler, Norma Schultz, 93 (MOC).

Pinewild: The Pinewild Men played a team and individual match at Tillary Tradition. The game of the day was one best ball was needed for scoring on par-3 holes and two best balls on par-4 and par-5 holes.

Team winners: Dwight Pike, Manfred Buller, Andy Warren, and Ed Rackowski, 23-under. Duane Barlow, Bob Bramwell, Miles Baldwin, and David Blessing at 22-under. Bob Ruetter, Don Jurenko, Arnold Bell, and Ron Cherep, 21-under.

Individual results: Flight 1 — Gross: Harold Bell, 75; Dwight Pike, 76. Net: Bob Bramwell, 68; Frank Rezeli, 70. Flight 2 — Gross: Andy Warren, 83; Ron Cherep, 86. Net: Doug Hardisty, 67; Jim Young, 69.

Closest to the pin on hole 4 was Harold Bell; on hole 8 Dwight Pike; on hole 13 Frank Rezeli; on hole 17 Bill Caso.

Foxfire: A Memorial Day, mixed couples tournament, was played on the East Course, and the format was each foursome selected the best drive, then all played their own ball into the cup. Full handicaps were used and the top-finishing teams were: Jaunita McCleney, Joette MacNichol, John Hunter and Bernie Bottoms, 109 (MOC); LaVerne Hess, Barbara Gaimari, Ken Shevlin and Dick Christman, 109 (MOC). Dianne Cole-Hall, Ron Schermerhorn, Brian Manley, and Jim Rankin, 111; Pat Bryan, Elsa Schermerhorn, Ken Bovill, Blind draw, 113 (MOC); Phyllis Bottoms, Bertha Christman, Ed Bryan, Blind Draw, 113 (MOC); Judy Rankin, Betsy Wands, Bob Gaimari, Gerry LaShomb, 113 (MOC); Lucille Cardelle, Judy Smith, Terry Ward, Jack Frusco, 115.

Woodlake: The Sandy Niners played on May 18 in a 1-2-3 Tournament (one best ball on par-5 holes, two on par-4 holes, and three on par-3 holes) with 48 members participating. The results: First — Liz Garner, Knollwood; Gerry Sullivan, Seven Lakes; Linda Talbot, Beacon Ridge; Brenda Tillman, Woodlake, scored 48. Second — Mary Snead, Beacon Ridge; Roberta Danielson, Woodlake; Esther Sweeting, Knollwood; Jill Brown, Whispering Pines, scored 54. Third — Sue Bachelder, Foxfire; Helen Mannion, Knollwood; Joyce Peterson, Woodlake; Maureen Malone, Seven Lakes, scored 56.

The Ladies Golf Association played May 27 on the Palmer Course in a Low Gross/Low Net contest. Pat Bickoff won low gross with 95. Ruth Straka won low net with 58, carding a career-best front nine at 42, and making a birdie on hole 8.

On Ace Day, played May 30 on the Palmer Course, Dorothy Dube led the field with a gross score of 85. Angie Forge won low net with 69. Dorothy Dube birdied hole 13, Pat Scoggins hole 6 and Pam Jones hole 7.
