EQUESTRIAN BRIEFS: Harness Track Has Busy Week

The Pinehurst Harness Track was all hunters and jumpers for the second half of May. Last weekend was a C-rated (state sanctioned, not national) show for about 150 horses.

Tammy Lynne’s Normandy, ridden by her daughter Kristian Kirk, won the $1,500 three-foot jumper stake, and Kirk won another jumper class with Liaison. Jumper blues were also earned by Raw Deal and Caroline Dowd, Farenheit and Dale Wright, and R.J. Stroller and Jane DeMeulemester.

In the hunter ranks, championships were pinned separately on Saturday and Sunday.

In the adult amateur divisions, tri-colors were earned by Simpson Bay and Kathy Bennett, Wendy Beaver’s Goin Places and Tory Clavan, Mystery Guest and Ann Compton, Double Down and Tory Clavan, and Family Affair with Stacey Ingram. Goin Steady and Jane Fairbanks and Bill and Cathy Smith’s Mattie, ridden by Melissa Andersen, were also in the top ribbons.

In the hopeful, baby green and schooling hunter ranks, championships and reserves were earned by Nancy Moore’s Moore Better, Parker Minchin’s Early Riser, and Melissa Andersen’s Maximo.

Also R. Strayhorn’s Cyrus, ridden by Maryann Charles, and R. Braga’s Inch By Inch with Patty Heuckeroth. Heuckeroth also piloted M. Hudgins’ Twofold, and Sue Sisco’s Windfall to the top of the a schooling division. Don Sheehan rode V. Millim’s Nickle Back to a championship.

Susie Jacobson rode her Valiant Leader to a reserve championship in the pre-adult hunters.

Many other locals were in the ribbons. Check the Web site www.rushshows.com for complete results.

The hunter calendar is changing in 2007, and the two shows will flip-flop in Pinehurst.

The C-rated schooling show will be the first weekend, with the A-rated show running on Memorial Day.

It’s Black Fly Time

The black fly control project is off and running for its 16th season, and needs support from all horse country residents. Ridding the area of the black flies, commonly called buffalo gnats, has made a tremendous positive impact on humans and livestock. Gnats are not only a nuisance, but also carry disease and can induce allergic reactions and dermatitis.

Treatment expert David Quist makes routine applications of Bti (brand name AquaBac XT) in 40 pond and stream sites from Southern Pines to Vass during the early and late summer months.

The fly larvae hatch, ingest the Bti, and die. The Bti is similar to the bacteria in acidophilus milk, and is the same ingredient used by organic gardeners on cabbage.

Each resident is asked to contribute $35 annually to the black fly control fund, administered by volunteers Donna Hildebrand, Marcia Bryant, and Linda Boone.

If your farm is a business, your contribution is tax deductible as pest control.

New residents who are not on the current mailing list, please mail contributions to BFCF, P.O. Box 1624, Southern Pines 28388, or call Hildebrand at 695-8650.

Art Exhibition

Artist Danila Devins of Southern Pines was notified recently that two of her paintings and one sculpture will be included in the Masters of Fox Hounds Association Centennial Exhibition.

The exhibition will begin at the MFA Masters Ball in New York in January 2007, and will travel around the country for one year.

Silent auction bids will be accepted, with a percentage retained by the MFA.

The two paintings were both watercolors: one titled The Staff at the Kennels and the other titled The Field. The sculpture is a bronze fox.

Flying Horsewomen

Three local horsewomen celebrated their May birthdays with a tandem skydive on May 20. Diana Hoberecht, Leah Leach and Zoe Digiovanni made a more successful landing from 10,000 feet than some of their unplanned equine dismounts from far less height.

Correction: The hound photo of Moore County’s Footloose and Greenwich in last week’s Hoofbeats should have been credited to local professional photographer Susan Edwards.
