State Games Kick Off Today in Cary

Twenty years of amateur athletics officially kick off today as the State Games of North Carolina come to Cary for over three weeks of friendly competition in 25 sports. First-day competitions include tennis, youth baseball district tournaments, in-line hockey, figure skating and the IPSC Pistol Shooting event.

Over the next four weekends a variety of playing fields, courts and tracks will be utilized to host some of the state's premiere sporting events. The State Games of North Carolina will feature 25 sports, including baseball, basketball, bowling, BMX, disc golf, figure skating, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, in-line hockey, indoor soccer, karate, lacrosse, mountain biking, shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, tae kwon do, track and field, volleyball, water skiing and wrestling.

Many participants have already registered to participate in the 2006 Games, with total registration numbers expected to be over a record-breaking 15,000. Also lined up for the 2006 State Games of North Carolina, the 20th Anniversary Celebration on June 23 will showcase 20 years of amateur athletics.

The main event, which includes the Parade of Athletes, the lighting of the cauldron, live music and much more, will begin at 7 p.m.

The evening will also feature a special appearance by 2006 Speed Skating Gold Medalist and Greensboro native Joey Cheek, as well as performances by country artist and native North Carolinian Jimmy Wayne and 2005 Nashville Star Winner Erika Jo.

North Carolina Amateur Sports is a 501c(3) nonprofit charitable organization that annually organizes the State Games of North Carolina, Cycle North Carolina and the Be Active Challenge. NCAS is dedicated to the promotion of the spirit of amateur sports, physical fitness and health to all ages and skill levels through the participation in organized events which enrich the state of North Carolina.
