BY AUDREY MORIARTY: Special to The Pilot One of Oscar Wilde's most popular plays, "Lady Windemere's Fan," was subtitled "A Play About a Good Woman."
Now director Mike Barker and screenwriter Howard Himel-stein have created a witty and romantic film based on Wilde's play titled, "A Good Woman," playing this weekend at the Sunrise Theater. Like all of Wilde's plots, there is always mistaken identity and witty dialogue -- "A Good Woman" is no exception.
In 1930s New York, the widowed Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) finds herself at the end of another relationship with a wealthy married man, penniless and no Mr. Next on the horizon. She decides to leave the United States behind for the target-rich environment of the sunny Italian Riviera and its wealthy aristocratic vacationers.
There, Erlynne selects Robert Windemere (Mark Umbers), a young, rich American who happens to be married to the beautiful and faithful Meg (Scarlett Johansson). Before long Windemere is bewitched by Erlynne, and the gossip begins to fly.
In turn, Lady Meg Windemere begins a dangerous flirtation with one of her husband's close friends, the handsome playboy, Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore).
This period piece has beautifully detailed sets and sumptuous costuming. It has wit, humor, drama, and, of course, a dark secret everyone is shocked to discover.
Rated PG for thematic material, sensuality and language, the movie runs 93 minutes. "Á Good Woman" shows June 2-4, with matinees at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and evening performances at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Tickets are $6 for matinees; $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
The movies are commercial free. Beer, wine, bottled water, sodas, candy, nuts and popcorn with real butter are available.
The Sunrise Theater is located on 250 SW Broad Street in Southern Pines.
