Body of Missing Man Found

By Faye Dasen: Of The Pilot Staff

Officers are "pretty sure" that a decomposed body found Thursday near Seven Lakes is that of William "Bill" Bost, who had been missing since April 16.

"He had a recorder in his pocket with a tape with his name on it," Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter said, "so we're pretty sure it was him."

Bost, 53, a former school board member, had disappeared from his home in Seven Lakes without taking his car, wallet, cell phone or any personal items. The Sheriff's Department conducted a search, assisted by the American Red Cross and a State Highway Patrol helicopter.

Bost, a well-known attorney with Democratic Party connections, had apparently hanged himself, according to Carter.

Lt. Richard Talbert of the Sheriff's Department said the body was found off Carthage Road on the back side of Seven Lakes. This was within a half-mile of where Bost lived, and there are no reports of any other missing person, according to Carter.

"We're running down the dental records now to try and get a positive ID from the medical examiner," Carter said. "Of course, his family has been notified, and we've told them what I told you."

Bost was reported missing Sunday, April 23, by his brother, Wayland Bost, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Wayland Bost went to his mother's house to ask if she'd seen him and she said she hadn't, according to the report. She then called the First Baptist Church in Pinehurst and asked if he had been there that Sunday.

Pastor David Marks said he had not been at church that Sunday.

"He was faithful to the nth degree," Marks said in an interview with The Pilot. "It was really unusual for him not to be here."

Chief Deputy Neil Godfrey said that the two brothers lived together, but rarely saw each other, according to the Sheriff's Department. Deputies found no signs of a struggle or foul play, Godfrey said.

Bost served as a campaign adviser for Wanda Hunt when she won election to the N.C. Senate in the 1980s. He took over Hunt's seat on the Moore County Board of Education upon her election. He also worked for Terry Sanford during his run for the presidency, and with Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and former Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker.

"He was a wonderful spiritual person," Hunt said. "He was very involved in his church. He was a spiritual, upright and intelligent person. He had integrity and honesty. I can't think of anything bad to say about him."

Boles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
