John L. Beck

Captain John “Jack” L. Beck (U.S. Navy, Retired), 75, of Pinehurst, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at his home.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines with Dr. David Hudson officiating.

Capt. Beck was born Feb. 17, 1931, to the late Kenneth W. Beck and Violet Louden Beck in East McKeesport, Pa. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Capt. Beck went directly to sea duty serving on seven warships, and commanding four — USS Whitehall (PCER 856), USS ACME (MSO508), USS William V. Pratt (DLG13), and the USS Chicago (CG11). He also served many years in the areas of strategic planning and policy, naval policy, and on the personnel staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Capt. Beck and his wife moved to Pinehurst in 1987. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the Men’s Golf Association. He loved the game of golf, and it was the main reason he moved to Pinehurst. He played in many Pinehurst member/guest tournaments. He was a member of the Hole in One Club.

Capt. Beck is survived by his wife, Betty Ann; his daughters, Cindy Beck and Cathy Beck, both of Clifton, Va.; his son, Clint Beck of Manassas, Va.; his grandson, Buddy Beck of Herndon, Va.; and his brother, Kenneth Beck of Pittsburgh, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Rd., Pinehurst, NC 28374.
