A Birdie and A Bogey

Birdie: By Bonnie McGowan, the daughter of our local golf legend Peggy Kirk Bell, for making her niece’s 16th birthday wish come true. Melody Miller celebrated her sweet 16 on Championship Sunday and wanted a smooch from the Open Champion Michael Campbell. Not only did Aunt Bonnie make that happen during an impromptu celebration at Pine Needles Sunday night, she made sure to get photographic proof of the memorable moment. Nice work, Bonnie!

Bogey: By the NBC Sports public relations department, which pestered The Pilot’s news staff all week to write about the network’s U.S. Open operations, for so callously failing to make a nice lady’s U.S. Open wish come true. Jean Sherrill, a retiree who answers the phones part time here at The Pilot, wanted her hero and NBC golf analyst Johnny Miller to autograph a 1979 photo. That picture showed Miller when he came in second place in the Colgate Hall of Fame Golf Classic at Pinehurst.

How hard was it to slide the old photo in front of the amicable broadcaster? Who do they think he is, Arnold Palmer? That’s certainly bad public relations from folks charged with hawking the network’s attributes.
